The first trailer for Anemone, three-time Academy Award-winner Daniel Day-Lewis’ first movie in eight years, has been released. Anemone is the feature directorial debut of Day-Lewis’ son Ronan Day-Lewis.
According to Focus Features, the film will premiere at the New York Film Festival in September. In addition to Day-Lewis, Anemone also stars Sean Bean, Samuel Bottomley, Safia Oakley-Green and Samantha Morton.
The synopsis for the film provided by Focus Features is brief, as it simply states that the film “explores the complex and profound ties that exist between brothers, fathers, and sons.” Based on the tone of the trailer, however, the film will clearly be taking on the form of a thriller.
Check out the first official trailer for Anemone, which is Day-Lewis’ first movie role since Paul Thomas Anderson’s 2017 film Phantom Thread, below.

While the fact that its directed by Day-Lewis’ son may raise some eyebrows, the iconic actor was famously picky with the projects he chose even before he retired, meaning that Anemone should have artistic merit beyond just being directed by his child. Since winning his first Academy Award for My Left Foot in 1989, for example, Day-Lewis has starred in just 12 movies, with Anemone being the 13th.
After its world premiere at the New York Film Festival, Anemone will hit select theaters on Friday, October 3 before expanding to additional theaters on Friday, October 10.
Widely considered to be one of the greatest actors to ever live, the 68-year-old Day-Lewis has won three Academy Awards for Best Actor (My Left Foot, There Will Be Blood, Lincoln), four BAFTA Awards, and three SAG Awards.
