Actress Aubrey Plaza was the latest guest on Amy Poehler’s podcast Good Hang with Amy Poehler and opened up about the recent passing of her husband. Plaza’s husband Jeff Baena died unexpectedly at the age of 47 years old in January of this year.
Amy Poehler and Aubrey Plaza are close friends following their years working together on the beloved NBC sitcom Parks and Recreation, thus making Good Hang the first public forum in which Plaza has extensively addressed her husbands death.
While Plaza was open and heartfelt in her remarks, she also maintained her trademark dark humor as she compared the feeling to the recent AppleTV+ movie The Gorge, which starred Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy.
According to Plaza, the “really dumb analogy” began as a joke “but I actually mean it.”
“In the movie, there’s a cliff on one side and there’s a cliff on the other side, then there’s a gorge in between, and it’s filled with all these like monster people that are trying to get them,” she explained.
“I swear, when I watched it, I was like, that feels like what my grief is like… or what grief could be like, where at all times, there’s a giant ocean of awfulness, that’s, like, right there, and I can see it. Sometimes I just want to dive into it, and just be in it. Then sometimes I just look at it, and sometimes I try to get away from it. But it’s always there.”

The Agatha All Along star also added that while she’s generally “okay” but that it’s “obviously a daily struggle.”
“Right in this very, very present moment, I feel happy to be with you. Overall, I’m here and I’m functioning. I feel really grateful to be moving through the world,” Plaza told Poehler.
Plaza is back out on the promotional trail to sell her new movie Honey Don’t, which was directed by Ethan Cohen and also stars Margarett Qualley and Chris Evans.
