Cahills Crossing in Kakadu, Australia is more than a typical tourist attraction, it is also one of the most dangerous roads in all of Australia.

It can be safely navigated during Australia’s dry season from ~May to October but as water levels rise the crossing becomes dicey. The primary concern isn’t the vehicle getting swept away by the waters, though that is certainly a potential danger, it is the massive Australian crocodiles in the Northern Territory lurking in the waters.

Australian Crocodile Gets Stuck Under Truck At Cahills Crossing, Swims Away

Cahills Crossing is in the Kakadu National Park and the road itself goes over the East Alligator River which is funny considering it is one of the best places in the world to view crocodiles, and not alligators.

There have been deaths there over the years from Australian crocodile attacks. Most recently, a 47-year-old man was killed by a crocodile back in 2017.

All of that is to say this footage of an Australian crocodile trapped under a truck, which gets stuck but later able to drive away as the croc is also able to swim away, is surreal. Why not build an arched bridge by now?!

Why’s it so dangerous?

According to Australia’s ABC News, there are around 10,000 saltwater and freshwater crocodiles that call the Kakadu National Park home. The waters are TEEMING with these stealthy predators.

At Cahills Crossing, the river crosses over the road in a way that allows these crocs to remain perfectly hidden when they want to be. The water clarity isn’t great, it is deep enough for them to dip below the surface easily, and large enough to sustain a LOT of crocodiles in the area, freshwater and saltwater.

All of that creates a perfect storm of dangerous conditions for any passersby.

Cahills Crossing has been featured numerous times over the years by media outlets as one of the most dangerous roads in Australia. But to see that huge croc stuck under the truck really hammers this point home.

Did you see what they were doing? Don’t do that.

As a tourist, you might not be able to see the Australian crocodiles down below but rest assured they can see you. Better safe than sorry!
