Have you been ordering margaritas wrong?
“Pro tip: If you’re choosing to get a margarita, go for the on the rocks and don’t go for the frozen,” a spokesperson for brand Cheers Health (@cheershealth) says in a viral TikTok.
He claims frozen margaritas have “to include at least ⅓ sugar in it” in order to freeze. “And we know that sugar and especially fructose is as harmful on your liver as alcohol is gram for gram,” he adds.
He advises drinkers avoid added sugar and go for a traditional margarita. He also suggests taking an after-alcohol aid like Cheers Restore, which he claims is “the No. 1 alcohol aid in America.”
‘I Know What I Asked For. I Want The Frozen’
In the comments section, viewers were unconcerned about the man’s warning.
“I’m not drinking for health,” one said.
“I better stop eating fruit if its as bad as alcohol,” a second joked.
“Are we really trying to say sugar is as bad as a literal poison?” another questioned.
Others said that bars and restaurants use the same amount of sugar in their regular and frozen margaritas.
“We put the exact same margarita in our frozen machine as we put over rocks,” one said.
“I used to work in a Mexican restaurant that used the exact same recipe for both,” a second agreed.
Do Frozen Margaritas Have More Sugar Then Regular Margaritas?
In theory, no. In practice, definitely.
As Jordan’s Skinny Mixes notes, the sugar content of a margarita depends on the ingredients, type, and size. In general, margaritas made with a mix have more sugar than traditionally made margaritas.
Original margaritas, made with triple sec, tequila, and lime juice, have 11 to 12 grams of sugar, “which is the same amount regardless of if you serve your margarita on the rocks or blended, because bartenders use the same mixer, ice, and liquor amounts.”
Fruit margaritas and other flavored margaritas are made with the same base ingredients as traditional margaritas. The base ingredients are blended with fresh or frozen unsweetened fruit and usually end up having an additional 11 to 12 grams of sugar.
But tons of bars and restaurants use commercial margarita mixes which are loaded with sugar and preservatives. They can contain 24-30 grams of sugar per 4-ounce serving.
And you’re more likely to run into commercial mixers in establishments with slushy-style margarita machines. You also have more control ordering on the rocks: Any bartender should be able to make you a traditional margarita, on the spot, with just its three fixed ingredients.
Is Sugar As Bad For The Liver As Alcohol?
It’s a charged claim by Cheers Health, but there is science behind it. According to WebMD, “Some studies show that sugar can be as damaging to the liver as alcohol, even if you’re not overweight.”
Is Cheers Restore Any Good?
Lil’ Drug Store Products, “the leading supplier of health and beauty products to retail and wholesale customers in the convenience channel,” says Cheers is “the leading brand in alcohol-related health and wellness in the U.S.” Reviews online are favorable.
Do These Hangover Cures Work?
According to Dr. Joy Marie Kim in an article for Mount Elizabeth, “Despite promising claims, the evidence behind hangover pills is largely anecdotal at best. Even if these pills do provide some relief from hangover symptoms, it is important to note that they do not prevent or undo damage that alcohol can cause to your body. The responsibility of processing all the alcohol you consumed still lies with your liver.”

So, it seems the choice of whether to order frozen or on the rocks is mostly up to preference, as is the decision to take an after-alcohol aid. But Cheers Health is right that ordering on the rocks can mean less sugar, especially if you specifically ask for a marg with just tequila, lime, triple sec vs. taking your chances with the big blended slushy machine. Or whatever is in the house-made margarita mix.
And, as always, the only sure way to have a healthy drinking experience is to drink responsibly.
