Gwyneth Paltrow recently shared details about her role in Marty Supreme, which she stars in alongside Timothee Chalamet. The Academy Award-winning actress revealed that she and the up-and-coming movie star share “a lot” of intimate scenes in the movie.
Marty Supreme, directed by Josh Safdie — who previously co-directed films such as Good Time and Uncut Gems with his brother Benny Safdie — is set to be Timothee Chalamet’s first film following his Oscar-nominated turn in A Complete Unknown, as it’s currently scheduled to release in December. Reports also indicate production on the third Dune film will begin this summer.
Other than Chalamet, Paltrow is the biggest movie star in the film, and according to her comments about the project, the pair not only share a lot of scenes together, but have “a lot of sex” in the film. Paltrow also added that when filming the scenes, they gave the intimacy coordinators the boot.
The movie is reportedly based on professional table tennis player Marty Reisman, who was crowned the table tennis U.S. Men’s singles champion in 1958 and 1960. The film is not expected to be a biopic, however, but rather, a “fictionalized original story.”
“We have a lot of sex in this movie. There’s a lot. There’s now something called an intimacy coordinator, which I did not know existed. I was like, ‘Girl, I’m from the era where you get naked, you get in bed, the camera’s on’ … We said, ‘I think we’re good. You can step a little bit back,'” Paltrow recently told Vanity Fair.
“I don’t know how it is for kids who are starting out, but if someone is like, ‘Okay, and then he’s going to put his hand here,’ I would feel, as an artist, very stifled by that”… I was like, ‘Okay, great. I’m 109 years old. You’re 14.’ ”
She added that the 29-year-old two-time Academy Award winner is “thinking man’s sex symbol. He’s just a very polite, properly raised, I was going to say kid. He’s a man who takes his work really seriously and is a fun partner.”
Paltrow’s comments seemed to trigger some social media users — while this is mere speculation, the bulk of complaints are likely coming from a younger generation, as multiple studies have shown their discomfort with sex scenes in movies.
“Wow. Wasn’t she one of the original Weinstein girls? How has she not heard of an intimacy coordinator. Also. The discomfort isn’t just about how you feel, lady. I…. this was a lot,” one Twitter user said.
“How does Gwyneth Paltrow – who knows all about the Harvey Weinstein scandal because she was one of his biggest female stars when it happened – not know there are intimacy coordinators now? For that matter, how does anyone in the industry not know this? And how does she also not seem to understand why they’re there?” another added.
“This is a 23 year age difference. Just doesn’t sit right with me,” a third chimed in (Chalamet turns 30 years old later this year).
Marty Supreme is set to be Paltrow’s first film role since she featured in Avengers: Endgame in 2019. In addition to Chalamet and Paltrow, Tyler, the Creator, Odessa A’zion, Penn Jillette, Kevin O’Leary, Abel Ferrara, Sandra Bernhard and Fran Drescher are also set to star in the Josh Safdie-directed film, which follows a ping-pong player (Chalamet) in 1950s New York City.
