Most agree that traveling can be a stressful experience—whether it’s rushing to the terminal to avoid missing your flight, ensuring you have all your essentials packed, or navigating potential delays, cancellations, and bustling airports. Occasionally, a fellow passenger’s behavior can create even more stress.
In 2023, a Fast Company-Harris Poll found that 62% of respondents have felt annoyed by their fellow passengers, with most pointing to poor flight etiquette. “Bad manners” is what viewers are saying about a woman who recently cracked open a High Noon on her flight. When she realized it was overflowing, she decided to shotgun it.
In a clip with 2.1 million views, Jordan Haslacker (@slackin.off) sits in the middle seat of a plane while on the way to Destin, Florida.
After taking the gum out of her mouth and “checking her surroundings,” she opens a pineapple-flavored High Noon. The seltzer immediately starts overflowing—a telltale sign the can was either shaken or too pressurized. The drink spills onto her tray and her. She makes the quick decision to shotgun it and then, out of breath, remarks, “My pants are wet.”
Despite draining her High Noon in a short amount of time, Hanslacker admits in the caption, “Not my best work, blaming the altitude lol.”
Who Is The Man Next To Her?
Viewers criticized Hanslacker’s decision to open the High Noon, claiming it was inappropriate plane etiquette. Many zeroed in on the man in the window seat and his reaction.
“You literally couldn’t have waited til you landed?” one viewer asked.
“Hey bestie reading the room is a skill we should all have and a plane is not the place,” another remarked.
“In the middle seat is diabolical,” a third said.
In the clip, Hanslacker’s seatmate looks at her as she shotguns the High Noon. He blinks several times in apparent disbelief. He then turns to look out his window, seemingly attempting to block the scene out.
“That man’s reaction had me SCREAMING,” a third stated.
These comments led to the mystery man weighing in. And as it turns out, he isn’t a stranger.
“I am the man sitting there, I’m not just some random man I am with them unfortunately,” he commented.
Should You Avoid Opening Canned Drinks On Flights?
In addition to potentially irritating the traveler next to you and creating a mess, cracking canned drinks open while in the air also poses a safety concern. In 2024, CNN reported that soda cans were exploding on Southwest Airlines flights. More than 100 incidents occurred in June 2024 alone due to heat.
Heat and carbonation are a volatile combination. Because canned carbonated beverages contain carbon dioxide, it can become disastrous if they are exposed to heat. The carbon dioxide can separate and expand, creating too much internal pressure and eventually exploding.
We’d like to emphasize that heat is the culprit here, not altitude. While altitude is not a contributing factor to exploding cans, it is far more dangerous for a can to explode in a confined cabin rather than on the ground. At the time of its report, a Southwest Airlines spokesperson told CNN it was “taking steps to keep onboard beverages cooler.”
So while cracking open a canned drink is totally OK—they are regularly served on flights, after all—just be aware of the risks involved, and proceed with caution. If the can feels warm, it’s best to wait before opening it.
