A Kentucky woman got an extremely unpleasant surprise at an Airbnb she recently rented. A viscous substance started bubbling out of a drain pipe on the ground floor. Water also poured out of the pipe, flooding the porch.

Earlier this week, Tami (@tamistastikitchen) posted a TikTok showing grey gunk foaming out of the pipe. The concrete floor of the Airbnb is partially submerged in dirty water.

She captions the initial TikTok “current Airbnb situation. Hosts not responding. Airbnb is no help.”

Tami’s post spread like a foul smell on a crowded elevator. As of this writing, it has 6.3 million views.

Tami didn’t respond to an inquiry sent via TikTok direct message.

What Was It?

As many commenters guessed, the substance and liquid came from the sewer. In a follow-up post, Tami says that raw sewage flooded the home.

One person claims that they identified the viscous grey mass bubbling out of the pipe in Tami’s Airbnb as wet wipes.

Wet wipes are often marketed as flushable and will typically disappear when you flush the toilet.

They are a menace to plumbing, however. The wipes gather gunk and other detritus and can become gigantic blobs known as fatbergs.

In 2020, BroBible reported, “Even if the wipes say ‘flushable’ or ‘septic-safe’ on the packaging, please do not dispose of them in the toilet. They are still too thick and can cause sewer blockages.”

Tami and her Airbnb host may have learned this lesson the hard way.

‘Nothing Beats a Jet2 Holiday’

Responses to Tami’s TikTok poured in much like the sewage poured into the Airbnb.

Brands were among the thousands who commented. Tide Rescue asked, “Do you need help?” Hilton offered to help her find an alternative place to say.

Betty Crocker quipped, “This is literally how The Last of Us started.”

Another person joked, “‘Hosts not responding’ that might BE the host.”

One of the most popular comments asked Tami to use the viral sound “nothing beats a Jet2holiday.” The sound is originally from a commercial for a British travel company. It’s now being used ironically to highlight travel fails.

Tami complied.

What happened next?

Tami says that someone did come out to fix the blockage and clean up the mess. In a comment, she says Airbnb support finally got in touch with the host after two hours of trying.

“They sent a guy last night to clean the porch and guess get it unclogged,” she wrote in another comment. “By 10pm we were able to use the plumbing. He said he didn’t have to proper tools to fix it and would return in the morning.”

Her Airbnb woes weren’t over, however. The same thing happened again.

After the second sewage situation, she says she decamped to another location.

In comments, Tami says Airbnb told her the host has to fix the issue before they rent the home out again.

“This is absolutely not an experience we want any guest to have, and our teams supported our guest with a full refund and new place to stay. We also suspended this listing as this issue is addressed,” an Airbnb spokesperson told BroBible via email. “In the rare event of an issue with a stay, every booking is protected by AirCover for Guests and our customer support team is available 24/7 to help.”

She also said she’s pursuing a refund on the Airbnb but it will be a while.

“They said it would take 2wks for a refund,” she wrote.

Hopefully by then the sight, and presumably smell, have been erased from her memory.
