Is there anyone out there who doesn’t believe in at least one conspiracy theory? If there is, they are really missing out. Because are few things more entertaining than going down a rabbit hole of conspiracy theories to see just how far people are willing to go to prove or debunk what they or someone else believes.
Case in point: On Tuesday, someone on Reddit posed the question, “What is a conspiracy you genuinely believe is true?” Almost 5,000 comments later, it has generated quite a list.
Some highlights…
The top comment: “As someone in I.T… there is no true anonymity. People are worried about the government tracking you, but they already do. Your ISP tracks every move you make (including incognito) and they will happily send the report to anyone.”
That one was only really popular because almost 200 comments followed, mostly about how useless incognito mode is and how much Amazon thinks if you buy one item, like a toilet seat or a dehumidifier, it thinks you’d like 100 more.
The second most popular comment about a conspiracy theory someone believes really got the tin foil hat society fired up. It received almost 300 follow-up comments.
“The story about how some McDonald’s worker recognized Luigi Mangione and they then found a manifesto on him is bull—- to cover up for some dodgy surveillance technique they used,” someone wrote.
“This one may not need be too far fetched. It seems unlikely someone saw a person wearing a beanie and an N95 mask in Altoona, PA and thought they should call 911. To my knowledge, the worker’s name has never been released,” read one reply.
Next up? “Dubai Chocolate is a psy-op.”
For those unfamiliar with this one, a commenter explained, “There’s a theory it is being pushed so that it replaces articles and websites about ‘Dubai porta potties’ when you search them up. This is a phenomenon where Instagram models and influences get paid by rich Arabs to get s— on among other things. The idea is that by pushing Dubai chocolate it obscures search results about Dubai porta potties when you search it up. Kind of similar to the theory that the Disney film Frozen was made so that theories about Walt Disney being cryogenically preserved don’t show up when you search them.”
But wait… there’s more
Some of the other, more fascinating conspiracy theories people say they believe include…
• They don’t make women’s clothes with pockets to sell more handbags.
• The Panama Papers are being actively suppressed.
• The current administration is dismantling science and research to keep you poor and unhealthy and easier to manipulate.
• MKultra didn’t end. It’s still going.
• Octopi are aliens whose embryos came here on a comet/asteroid and landed in the primordial stew.
• The Trump assassination attempt was faked.
• Pretty sure they killed Diana.
• Big oil invented and pushed paper straws to make people resent environmentalists.
• The civil war was a cover up for a war against vampires.
