Los Angeles has cemented itself as the Car Chase Capital of the United States thanks to the many high-speed pursuits that regularly unfold on its streets. That includes the one that went down over the weekend and spawned some wild footage due to a couple of carjackers who harnessed a few difficult vehicles—including a big rig—before successfully evading capture.

The city of Los Angeles is home to close to four million people who primarily rely on cars to get from one place to another while dealing with (and contributing to) the area’s notorious traffic issues.

L.A. is a major reason California cracks the top five when it comes to states with the most car thefts per capita on an annual basis (Colorado leads the way on that front if you’re not counting Washington, D.C.). Oakland earns the top spot on the podium when it comes to cities in The Golden State, but its biggest metro area tends to get the most attention due to the media coverage devoted to the car chases that weave their way through its streets on a regular basis.

We were treated to our latest entry in the canon thanks to what went down on Sunday night, and the criminals responsible went to some wild lengths to avoid being caught before they managed to escape.

Carjackers in Los Angeles stole three vehicles—including an 18-wheeler—during a crazy car chase

According to ABC7, the Los Angeles Police Department responded to a call concerning a carjacking in Antelope Valley around 11 P.M. on Sunday after two armed suspects stole a pickup truck from a victim who chased them in another vehicle that they fired at while being pursued.

California Highway Patrol members also took fire after joining the pursuit that headed south toward Santa Clarita, and the suspects ended up driving on the wrong side of the freeway and unsuccessfully attempted to force other people out of their vehicles before taking control of a tanker truck (which was thankfully not carrying any hazardous substances) in a scene straight out of Grand Theft Auto.

Multiple news stations dispatched helicopters to track the chase as it unfolded, and the semi eventually made its way into downtown L.A. before the carjackers took control of another pickup truck they continued to drive until fleeing on foot in the vicinity of the Boyle Heights neighborhood.

Police say they lost track of the suspects at that point, and they subsequently stole a black sedan they used to get away. They have not been captured as of this writing, and it’s unclear if authorities have any leads on their identity.
