Mistakes happen—especially in a fast-paced environment like a restaurant.
From simple mistakes, like a server forgetting to ring in a customer’s order, to life-threatening ones, like a server misrepresenting the allergen content in certain items, human error in the industry seems inevitable. What matters is how restaurants and servers remedy those tense situations.
When a server brings a table the wrong order, while not mandatory, it’s often custom for restaurants to let customers keep an incorrect order in addition to the correct one and/or comp items off the bill. However, that was not one woman’s experience when she was served the wrong steak at a restaurant in Los Angeles. The way Alyson’s (@kayeeeotic) server handled the matter left her in utter disbelief.
In a 10-second video, TikToker Alyson shows the plates she and her friend were served. They both received steak. Her friend, TikToker @sondersoull, who is sitting across from her, pats the steak with her fingers before licking it. She was seemingly acting playful for the video.
The text overlay on the video announces what happened right after. It says, “She doesn’t know it yet but 30 seconds after licking her steak, the server would snatch both plates away and say, ‘these aren’t yours’ and serve it to the table next to us. Uhh.”
Alyson was confused, as the other table had ordered the same exact thing.
“They brought our food 1 minute after that we literally ordered the SAME EXACT THING. Uhh anyway we were super buzzed and thought it was a joke & by the time they gave it to the other table was too late …. I’ve never had a restaurant take back food they gave me by mistake .. have yall????” she added in the caption.
Fellow Servers Are Horrified
Many servers weighed in. They shared that serving food that’s already been served to another customer is a huge no-no in the industry.
“Lmao no I have not and when I was a server they told me that once you dropped food at a table, you could not pick it back up even if it went to the wrong place,” one viewer stated. “Always thought it was a silly rule but I see now they had their reasons.”
“Yeah no. As a server, once the plate hits the table, it cannot be brought to another table. You either let those people have it or toss it,” another echoed.
“Anything that touches a table is theirs or throw away,” a third agreed.
In response to viewers who questioned if Alyson spoke up, she shared that she didn’t for several reasons.
“Noooooo. we thought it was a joke !! We were hella buzzed and like in disbelief and confused and then they brought our food right after so like … uhhh,” she wrote.
Why Aren’t Restaurants Permitted To Re-Serve Contaminated Food To A Different Customer?
Since the restaurant is located in California, the server’s actions violate both California’s Retail Food Code and the FDA Food Code. That violation can lead to severe penalties for the restaurant. The restaurant could eventually get hit with a fine, get its license suspended, and even experience a closure if there are repeated violations or at the discretion of a health department.
Re-serving contaminated food is a health hazard, and the person who gets re-served food can contract certain illnesses. Cleveland Clinic lists the following illnesses that can be transmitted through saliva:
- Colds
- Flus
- Mono
- Cold sores
- Strep throat
- Hepatitis B
