A server’s day-to-day can sometimes feel routine. But every so often, a certain kind of customer shows up and spices things up in the most unexpected way.
Los Angeles Woman Shares Wild ‘Server Life’ Story
TikTok creator @girlypopzonly posted the storytime video, which has been viewed more than 770,000 times.
She says it started out like any other table. “I got sat a party of 10,” she recalls, adding that when she asked for drink orders, the group asked for “just water.” Then came the kicker: They also wanted “a jug of lemons” and “a lot of sugar.”
Already suspicious, she still brought what they asked for.
“Tell me why they started making lemonade at the table,” she says, laughing. According to her, they had brought their own jug, were squeezing the lemons, adding sugar, and passing it around to everyone.
“I couldn’t believe my eyes,” she admits. For a moment, she even wondered if they planned to sell the lemonade around the restaurant. “It looked really good,” she joked. “I was like, wait, can I have a glass too?”
But the strange events didn’t stop there. Once the group began ordering food, she overheard something. One of them told the rest, “Order whatever you want, I’m going to mark this as fraud anyways. I’m gonna call my credit card company.”
Hearing it out loud floored her. “Working here really just makes me young,” she said. “Every day it’s something new. These things crack me up.”
Do People Really Make Their Own Lemonade While Dining?
It turns out this isn’t the first time servers have had to deal with guests making drinks out of lemons and sugar.
On Reddit’s r/serverlife, one user asked if it was normal for guests to request water, lemons, and sugar to whip up their own lemonade.
The responses were split. Some said they didn’t care unless people were asking for an excessive number of lemon slices. Others admitted it irritated them, and some restaurants even charge for “extra lemons.” Servers on TikTok and Facebook have echoed the same sentiment: while one or two slices are fine, two entire sliced lemons can push it.
What Is The Credit Card Chargeback Scam?
The other part of the story—the claim about marking charges as fraud—isn’t unheard of in the restaurant industry. Some customers will dispute a bill after the fact, even though they received food and service. For restaurants, this can mean lost revenue and wasted time fighting the claim.
Because of this, many establishments use secure payment processing systems to protect themselves. Still, the scam is common enough for servers to be aware of it.
