‘What Kind Of Sorcery Is This?’: Georgia Man Demos ‘Most Hated’ Barbecue Tool. Here’s Why You May Actually Want It Though

Everyone’s grilling arsenal looks basically the same. However, one tool may cause your grillmaster credentials to be questioned.

Even though summer is drawing to a close, that doesn’t mean that one has to put away the grill. Whether you’re using charcoal, propane, or pellets, there’s always time for a good barbecue.

That said, grilling can be harder than you think. That’s why some people buy additional tools, such as a meat thermometer, in order to cook the perfect dish. However, there’s one tool that has proven controversial in the grilling world. Here’s why one pitmaster says you need to get it anyway.

What Tool Should You Add To Your Grill?

In a video with over 143,000 views, TikTok user Brent (@brentalt1) demonstrates what he says is “the most hated tool in barbecue.”

That tool is a rib membrane remover. As shown in the video, Brent simply puts the remover under the membrane of some beef ribs and begins to twist. Slowly but surely, the rib membrane is cleanly removed.

“All you do is twist them, wrap them a couple of times,” he explains.

“Bam! Look how thick that is,” he says, showing the membrane. “One take, clean as a whistle. Ready for the season and ready for the smoker.”

Do You Need A Membrane Remover?

While Brent appears to be promoting a specific product, many commenters were left wondering whether they needed a membrane remover—or if the membrane is supposed to be removed in the first place.

Concerning the latter, most American grilling experts agree that it’s a good idea to remove the membrane, also known as the “silver skin.” They say that the membrane doesn’t break down like the rest of the meat while grilling, which can result in chewiness.

Additionally, some say leaving the membrane intact can prevent spices and rubs from fully penetrating the meat, which will affect the flavor.

Naturally, some dishes may call for the membrane to stay intact. There’s also healthy debate about whether removing the membrane is fully necessary. One’s decision to do so is strictly a matter of taste.

Whether one needs a membrane remover is a different question. Reviews for such tools are mixed, and in most cases, experts recommend simply starting the removal process with a dull knife, then peeling off the rest using a paper towel.

Commenters Aren’t Sold

While Brent says in comments that the tool is “a gadget I really like and it’s working well for me,” commenters under the video weren’t convinced.

“Took you longer to use that tool than it does me to just use my finger lol,” wrote a user.

“Personally feel taking off the membrane is overrated. I feel leaving it on help keep ribs juice in,” added another.

“Score them and cook or use a paper towel,” advised a third.

“You can say it all you want but that is just another ’gadget’ to line your pockets that isn’t needed. Paper towels are cheaper and just as easy,” stated a further TikToker.
