‘I’m So Disgusted Right Now’: Woman Buys Brand-New Bag Of Purina Pro-Plan Dog Food. Then She Discovers Something Hiding Inside

You trust that the food you’re buying for your pets is safe, properly stored, and free from contamination. It’s a reasonable expectation, especially when you’re purchasing from a major brand at a retail store.

But one dog owner’s discovery inside a supposedly fresh bag of dog food has left pet parents questioning what might be lurking in their own pet food bags.

Woman Finds Live Worms And Webs Inside Dog Food

In a viral video with more than 888,000 views, a dog owner who posts about her dogs under the moniker @2beefyboys shared a disturbing discovery she made while opening a brand-new bag of Purina dog food.

“OK. I am so disgusted right now,” she says in the TikTok, holding up the freshly opened bag.

The dog owner explained that she accidentally cut the bag open from the bottom instead of the top. And that’s when she saw it—webs covering the inside of the bag near the corners and live worms crawling around the food, which are clearly seen in the video.

“This is horrible. I, like, can’t even believe this right now,” she says in disbelief.

It’s the kind of thing that would make any pet owner immediately toss the bag and question everything they’ve been feeding their beloved pets.

Not The First Time

But here’s what makes this even more concerning: She says this isn’t the first time it’s happened to her.

“This happened to me a while ago, and I wrote Purina. They didn’t believe me. They were basically like, ‘Oh, you stored it wrong,’ which I store in an airtight container,” she says.

While she claims Purina dismissed her complaint last time, this time, she has video proof.

“This is what my dogs would have been eating for a month if I would have cut it open from the right side. But I cut it open from the bottom. And look at all this. This is unacceptable,” she says.

She adds that when she initially complained to Purina about the previous incident and threatened to go public on social media, she didn’t follow through because she barely knew how to use TikTok. But this second time pushed her to share the footage.

“And like I said, it happened to me before, and Purina totally gaslit me. And they didn’t believe me. … But I want people to know, do not buy this food,” she says.

“PURINA PRO PLAN HAS LIVE WORMS INSIDE! Cut it open from the bottom!! This was a BRAND NEW bag!! We need to get these bags off the shelf!!” she said in the caption.

Pests In Pet Food

What the woman found in her Purina Pro Plan bag are most likely Indian meal moths and their larvae, one of the most common pests in stored food products, the University of Maryland Extension explained. Finding “webbing or a large number of caterpillars or worm-like larvae crawling about in a box or container of cereal or spices is often the first indication of an infestation.”

The webbing the woman saw is silk produced by the larvae as they feed, which collects their waste and shed skin. Indian meal moths feed on a wide variety of dry goods, including grains, flour, cereals, and, yes, dry pet food.

The moths typically make their way into homes through food that’s already infested when purchased, like this dog food.

Adult female moths lay eggs directly on or in food sources, and when larvae hatch, they burrow into the product, Griffin Pest Solutions reports.

“In all likelihood, you picked up your moths from your local grocery store,” the company notes. The infestation can begin at food processing facilities, warehouses, or retail stores before the product ever reaches your home.

Purina’s Recent Quality Control Issues

Between November 2023 and April 2024, the FDA received approximately 1,300 adverse event reports about various Purina pet foods, mostly regarding Purina Pro Plan products.

While those complaints were about pet illnesses rather than pest contamination, they demonstrate an ongoing pattern of quality concerns.

In 2023, Purina recalled Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets due to elevated vitamin D levels caused by a supplier error. More recently, an FDA inspection of Purina’s Clinton, Iowa, facility in April 2024 resulted in the company receiving a citation for failing to reanalyze its food safety plan despite being aware of adverse event reports.

Commenters React

“Ive used purina for 9+ years how are yall finding this stuff mine are always fine. Its gotta be the way yalls is stored or the manufacturers around you,” a top comment read.

“It’s not a Purina problem. This is where you bought it problem,” a person said.

“That’s pantry moth larvae, and it’s not your fault.. it is the fault of the store you purchased it from. I’d bring the bag right back,” another wrote.

“I’ve worked in a pet store for 8-9 years and Purina is the only brand I’ve had people bring back food like that,” a commenter added.
