Convicted predator R. Kelly, currently serving a 31-year combined sentence at FCI Butner Medium I in North Carolina, was reportedly rushed to the hospital to treat an overdose on Friday, June 13. Kelly alleges that overdose was brought on by being given an “overdose quantity” of medicine from the prison staff.

According to a court filing from Tuesday, June 17, R. Kelly alleges that prison staff, after putting him in solitary confinement, gave him an ‘overdose quantity’ of anti-anxiety and sleep medication compared to the usual dosages he takes.

Kelly’s lawyer also alleges that three senior officials with the Bureau of Prisons ‘plotted to have him killed’ by another inmate by having an incarcerated member of the Aryan Brotherhood transferred to Kelly’s prison with instructions to kill him.

The court filing, obtained by USA Today, states that Kelly was hospitalized for two days beginning on June 13 before being removed from Duke University Hospital “against medical advice.”

TMZ adds that the overdose was intentional, too, claiming that “Bureau of Prisons staff at his federal center in North Carolina purposefully gave him too much medication, causing the overdose.”

“The lawyers say leading up to his overdose, Kelly was placed in solitary confinement on June 10 ‘against his will,’ shortly after his team filed an emergency motion for furlough last week. In that motion, Kelly’s team claimed three Bureau of Prisons officials allegedly devised a plot to have him killed by another inmate.”

“Then, in the early morning hours of June 13, according to the filing, Kelly woke up feeling ‘faint’ and ‘dizzy.’ ‘He started to see black spots in his vision. Mr. Kelly tried to get up, but fell to the ground,’ the updated motion stated. ‘He crawled to the door of the cell and lost consciousness.'”

Federal prosecutors have since called Kelly’s claims about a murder plot “repugnant.”

“Kelly’s motion must be denied because this Court lacks jurisdiction to afford Kelly the relief that Kelly seeks, and Kelly is seeking relief in the wrong forum, via the incorrect procedural vehicle, and having failed to exhaust his administrative remedies in the facility where he is incarcerated. There is no legal basis for Kelly’s motion to be before this Court,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Jason Julien wrote in the government’s response.

58-year-old R. Kelly, real name Robert Sylvester Kelly, was convicted in September 2021 in Brooklyn federal court on multiple charges related to racketeering, sex trafficking, and assaulting minors, and was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison in June 2022.
