John Rambo, a prequel film set in the Rambo franchise, is reportedly in the works. Noah Centineo, best known for his work on the Netflix projects To All The Boys and The Recruit, has been tapped to take on the iconic role of Rambo.

The Rambo franchise began with the release of First Blood in 1982. The film then spawned four sequels: Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985), Rambo III (1988), Rambo (2008), and Rambo: Last Blood (2019), combining to gross over $800 million worldwide.

In addition to Centineo being attached to star, filmmaker Jalmari Helander, best known for his 2022 action film Sisu, is attached to direct. At this time, it does not appear that Sylvester Stallone, who starred as John Rambo in the previous five entries, is attached to the project in any capacity.

While plot details have yet to be disclosed, reports indicate the film will be an origin story of a young John Rambo during the Vietnam War.

“Sources say that the package still has a couple of hurdles to overcome, but things are headed in the right direction with hopes to shoot top of 2026 in Thailand. Insiders also add that while no deals are in place, Lionsgate is the front-runner to land the package. The studio has released the past two Rambo pics and also has a relationship with Helander having worked with him on Sisu.” [via Deadline]

After getting his start on the Disney Channel series Austin & Ally, Centineo’s star turn came in Netflix’s To All the Boys movies, which released between 2018 and 2021.

In the years since, he’s had roles in Black Adam, Dream Scenario, and a starring role in the Netflix series The Recruit. This year, he had a role in Alex Garland’s Warfare and the indie film Our Hero, Balthazar.
