A scrappy little terrier by the name of ‘Scrim‘ has become a legitimate folk hero in New Orleans after he managed to evade capture for 7+ months, surviving gun shots wounds, hurricanes, and more along the way.
This tiny terrier has captured the city’s heart and his legend is only expanding since his capture. Scrim was out there cuttin’ it up and living his best life for over half a year. Pure, unbridled freedom. Anytime someone would get near Scrim he would take off. Meanwhile, he had been SHOT TWICE, was missing a chunk of his ear, a toenail, and had gotten into god knows what out there in the city.
There were fliers around New Orleans saying ‘do not approach’ because Scrim would book it anytime someone got close. And if you care about the health of this dog, Scrim’s story has a good ending as he was finally captured this week and taken to the Metairie Small Animal Hospital in New Orleans for monitoring. At this point, Scrim was all smiles:
Scrim was finally caught after he went into a fenced-in field. From there, animal control was able to sedate him with a tranquilizer dart. After Scrim went down for a nap they were able to rescue him and get him to the nearby animal hospital and that’s when the scope of what Scrim endured in New Orleans over the past half year came into picture.
Michelle Cheramie of Zeus’ Rescue, who led the team that captured Scrim, wrote on Facebook that Scrim BOOKED IT for 7 minutes after being hit with the tranquilizer dart. It was a frantic chase to keep up with him. She wrote “Starsky hopped in yard with me to help capture him. We were yelling his locations back and forth to each other so that the team on the outside could make sure he didn’t escape through any gaps.”
At the 8th minute he slowed down as the sedatives kicked in and they got him. The team quickly took him to the animal hospital where the discovered Scrim had a body temperature of 108 degrees so they began treating that. Then came the X-Rays.
Scrim The Scrappy Dog Endured Everything New Orleans Threw At Him
Michelle Cheramie wrote that when Scrim went down for X-Rays they immediately found bullets inside of him. She wrote “He had been shot with guns at least twice while on the streets. The bullets lit up on the X-rays.”
Cheramie also added that Scrim had lost a toenail during his time on the lam in New Orleans, a chunk of his ear is missing, and he had wounds on his chest and tail. It is unknown at this time what caused any of those wounds but it’s evident that Scrim is as tough of a dog as there ever was.
Scrim Goes Viral
While the entire city of New Orleans is buzzing about Scrim, those on the outside have primarily gotten their Scrim news through social media. Several videos on TikTok have gone viral where people describe Scrim’s life on the run in a way that sounds tailor-made for a Hollywood film. NOLA.com even described him as posing ‘like John Dillinger did when captured’ in a way that only enhances the legend of this pup:

Here’s Scrim back in August evading capture, as he did for over half a year. He survived some INSANE Summer storms on the run including category-2 Hurricane Francine that hit New Orleans back in September:

Scrim’s New Orleans story got even better this morning. Zeus’ Rescues announced just 45 minutes ago that his health had improved. In a new Facebook post, they wrote “Physically, his wounds are healing and his bloodwork looks great. Mentally, he is out of Lost Dog Syndrome and coming back into his pre-escape personality.”
All of the ‘Lost Dog’ fliers looking for Scrim are set to come down today followed by celebratory cocktails for Scrim, as is the New Orleans way.
Scrim is expected to be able to leave his New Orleans animal hospital this weekend and will (presumably) be fostered until a permanent home is found for him, one that fits his needs. What a story.
