Almost as legendary as his films is the extensive list of Quentin Tarantino’s unrealized projects. One of those projects is Star Trek film that Simon Pegg says was “bats— crazy.”

During a panel at Fan Expo Boston on Saturday, actor Simon Pegg — who played Montgomery “Scotty” Scott in three Star Trek films — revealed that he got a breakdown of the script from the franchise’s producers, J.J. Abrams and producer Lindsey Weber.

Tarantino would’ve directed a script that was co-written by Mark L. Smith, the writer of films such as The Revenant and Twisters. The cast of the JJ Abrams films — Pegg, Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, Zachary Qunito, John Cho, Karl Urban, etc. — would’ve have seemingly remained in place as the cast of Tarantino’s film.

Simon Pegg says Quentin Tarantino’s Star Trek script was “bats— crazy”

“That was what we call in the business bats— crazy. It was everything you would expect a Quentin Tarantino Star Trek script to be,” Pegg explained.

“I think it would have been such an incredible sort of curio to see ‘Star Trek’ through his lens. I don’t know how it would have gone over with the fans, but it certainly would have been an interesting thing.”

At the time that Tarantino’s Star Trek script was gathering steam the early 2020s, reports indicated that it was based on an episode of the original Star Trek series that takes place largely earthbound in a 1930s gangster setting.

“The episode in question is most likely ‘A Piece of the Action,’ the 17th episode of the second season of Star Trek: The Original Series. The installment aired January 12, 1968 and found the Enterprise crew visiting a planet with an Earth-like 1920s gangster culture,” reported Deadline.

Tarantino most recently directed 2019’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and has been mulling his final project ever since. He reportedly got close to beginning production of a film called The Movie Critic, but that project apparently morphed into what’s now being called The Adventures of Cliff Booth, which sees Brad Pitt return to his Oscar-winning role and will be directed by David Fincher.
