First Thoughts On The ‘Stranger Things’ Season 5 Trailer

Netflix just dropped the first teaser trailer for Stranger Things season 5 on us. As we all know, this will be the final chapter from Hawkins, Indiana.

With the Stranger Things season 5 trailer fresh in my mind, I wanted to rattle off thoughts as I had them. A sort of stream of consciousness if you will.

‘Stranger Things’ Season 5 Trailer: First Thoughts

— Firstly, it is wild that this show has spanned 9 years. These kids have lived half of their lives with Stranger Things revolving around them. I know we joke a lot about how much they’ve aged during the series but I don’t think we really appreciate how this has been the defining characteristic of their professional careers for a decade, and they started out as just kids!

00:01 — Kicking the trailer off with a shot of Steve Harrington feels right. He’s always been the fan favorite even though he is outside of the core group of kids.

00:05 Things pick back up in the Fall of 1987. Season 4 took place in March 1985 so this jumps in 8 months after the last season ended, in that timeline.

00:07 They’re transmitting messages again. Was this a thing in the 1980s? Every so-called ‘nerd’ back then knew all of the ins and outs of AV Club and could pick up and operate any radio on the planet? We’ve seen it in past seasons. Sending messages across the country, but Steve appears to be hijacking the WSQK radio station here.

00:17 This is not the first time we have seen the WSQK radio station. I remember stumbling on this Reddit thread a year ago where someone found the WSQK station IRL and people had all sorts of random commentary on it.

— We see all of the core cast members early on. Then we see a group of kids in some dystopian bunker that I imagine people in the Soviet Union hid out in during the 80s when there were atomic war drills.

Things are moving fast…

00:22 — Has anyone in the history of TV been less capable of the tasks set forth for her than Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder)? Her strength as a mother is unmatched and seems to pull her through every task because she really is a worrying/bumbling fool at most times.

00:43 — We’ve got the military. Schisms in the time/space continuum or whatever. It is full blown apocalyptic in Hawkins, Indiana… Why are they transmitting messages when the military is in town? On what planet are these kids more capable than the U.S.military in the 1980s?

00:46: Dudes are just marching in formation in front of portals now? We’ve seen the other kids in the past with powers like Eleven, and Vecna. Why can’t someone just blast through that portal like she did at the end of Season 1?

What we can clearly see there at least are those are American military servicemen. So there isn’t the stranger Russian connection from seasons past, at least for now.

00:48 — Eddie Munson was the man. People defacing his tombstone deserve to wind up in the upside down.

00:50 — Max has gotta wake up. Sadie Sink’s character was incredible in seasons past. She alone is responsible for the revival of the ‘Running up the Hill’ by Kate Bush. She needs to wake up!

00:57 — Do they really think ‘kill it with fire’ is going to work here? Really?

This trailer is incredible

00:58-1:16 — There are some incredible shots in this 18 seconds. It jumps all around but they manage to pack in a LOT. We see the crew in what appears to be the Upside Down. Hopper and Joy about to make out. Eleven suiting up for battle with nothing but a neckerchief. Then we see her and Hopper and he’s acquired a weapon inside the Upside Down.

Is that the first time we have seen guns inside the Upside Down?

1:22 — Dustin Henderson is beat to heck. It looks like he has been punched squarely in the face and has a broken nose. Then the trailer jumps and we see one of the rat/dog-like bony creatures, the one that ate Samwise Gamgee back when he was dating Joy.

1:28 — Stress levels are peaking here. We know that because over the music they pump in audio of Eleven screaming her lungs out and holding her head while Hopper attempts to console her.

In that same scene, Eleven and Hopper are wearing the same outfits they were before in the upside down.

I am starting to think this will be a season where the crews are paired off on missions. We will see Hopper-Eleven together for a large chunk of Stranger Things Season 5 if my prediction is true.

The Stranger Things Season 5 Trailer Needs More Steve

1:30 — Steve Harrington shifting gears and ripping a hotrod into the Upside Down is awesome. Steve is the best. I want his hair.

1:33 — Will Byers fainted. Shocker. This is my shocked face.

1:37 — Is hiding underwater really advisable? Can’t these things smell?

1:42 — Whatever that tornado wrapping around the radio tower was, that was pretty cool. Those visuals probably cost Netflix a pretty penny. Also the narrator saying ‘blood’ as they showed someone washing blood on their hands was a little too on the nose.

1:55 — Would it be so crazy to give her a weapon too? Hopper has his rifle cocked, locked, and ready to go. She is just standing there with her superpowered-brain like ‘yeah, I got this’ but would it hurt to give her a gun? Eleven could always default to using her brain power…

1:59 — Where on god’s green earth did Hopper get multiple grenades from? Did the military deputize them for these missions?

2:04 — I’m sorry, did Eleven figure out how to super jump? Did she just jump on top of a dang building?!?

2:07 — Joy looking shocked again. What a shocker. Truly, I’m shocked that she’s shocked.

2:12 — Vecna should put on some pants.

2:18 — Found who? Eleven? The crew? Who did he find?

2:34 — So the outro says Volume 1 will be released on November 26 and Volume 2 will be released on Christmas. The finale will be a standalone release on New Year’s Eve. We now have firm dates.

Where was the classic Stranger Things music? Don’t they know who much we love that synthesizer???
