IMAX tickets for Christopher Nolan’s highyl-anticipated film The Odyssey went on sale yesterday, which would be a totally normal sentence if it weren’t for the fact that the movie isn’t hitting movie theaters until one year from today — July 17, 2026.
The AMC Lincoln Square in New York City, which has one of the few “true” 70MM IMAX theaters in the country, sold out of tickets to Christoper Nolan’s epic almost immediately, leading to reselling on the secondary market, which isn’t something the industry has seen before, at least as far modern movie-going is concerned.

While the eagerness to see The Odyssey is certainly a promising sign for the movie business overall — certainly in terms of what works, and that’s acclaimed filmmakers making big, event movies — the way that AMC is handling it seems to be shortsighted, as scalping and reselling is a dangerous precedent to set.
The way to get people into movie theaters is by making is MORE accessible, not less so. If all of the movies people actually want to see in theaters become hassles to see them, they’ll be even further incentivized to wait and watch it at home.
