A sequel to The Social Network — widely considered to be one of the greatest films of the 21 century — is in the works with acclaimed writer Aaron Sorkin returning to pen the script. However, instead of David Fincher directing like he did the original, Sorkin will take over the director’s chair.

While Aaron Sorkin’s career as a writer is pretty much beyond reproach, his directorial efforts have been a bit spottier: Molly’s Game, The Trial of the Chicago 7, and Being the Ricardos.

According to reports, the sequel — which is being described as a “follow up” rather than a direct sequel — will use the Wall Street Journal‘s “The Facebook Files” by Jeff Horowitz as its source text.

“Since its release, Sorkin has noted on several occasions his interest in doing a follow-up, but he couldn’t find the right angle. Following the events of January 6, 2020, when the U.S. Capitol was attacked, Sorkin found new inspiration saying in an interview last year that he believed Facebook played a part.”

“Sources stress that the new film isn’t a ‘January 6’ movie and will focus not just on the 2020 election but also Facebook’s effect on teens, preteens, violence and countries outside the U.S.” [via Deadline]

Reports indicate Sorkin will now turn his attention to casting the film’s ensemble, although it is unclear if Jesse Eisenberg will be reprising his role of Mark Zuckerberg, which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.

In addition to The Social Network, Sorkin’s screenwriting credits include A Few Good Men, Malice, The American President, Charlie Wilson’s War, Moneyball, and Steve Jobs. His screenwriting has earned him for Academy Award nominations for either Best Adapted or Original Screenplay.
