I’m a week removed from my four-day kayaking trek through the Apostle Islands in northern Wisconsin, and my body feels pretty great. To be fair, I attribute most of my soreness on camping trips to how I sleep as opposed to my physical activities during the day. In the past, I could never get fully comfortable, and my back would be sore for days. Ever since I upgraded to a Therm-a-Rest Trail Pro Sleeping Pad, my nights of sleep in the tent are better than ever.

There’s a lot of debate about foam pads versus inflatable pads, and it largely depends on personal preference. From my personal experience sleeping on foam pads for years, they just don’t cut it. I’m a big guy who sleeps on his back, so I need the right amount of support and comfort with versatility for different surfaces. A foam pad? You get one setting. An inflatable pad? You can adjust the firmness exactly to your liking. That served me well in the Apostle Islands, where every night was a different campsite with different terrains (leaves, grass, dirt, sand, etc.).

The Therm-a-Rest Trail Pro self-inflates most of the way, and then you just need to provide a few extra breaths to get it exactly where you want it to be. Plus, the WingLock™ valve has three times the airflow rate thanks to a larger opening and one-way inflation.

If you’ve used compact camping/backpacking gear, you know that most items pack up compactly to maximize space. Not only does this pad pack up pretty compactly, but it also only took me a couple of minutes to pack up.
