The 11 NFL Teams That Have Produced The Most MVP Winners

The Associated Press first presented an award to honor the NFL’s “Most Outstanding Player” in 1957 before officially adopting the “Most Valuable Player” moniker a few years later, and the agency is still tasked with naming the best player in the league. Most teams have had at least one guy who managed to win it on their roster, and some of those franchises can lay claim to a pretty impressive number compared to the rest of the competition.

As things currently stand, there are just six NFL teams that are unable to claim a single player who managed to win the A’s Most Valuable Player award while rocking their jersey: the Saints, Jaguars, Cardinals, Buccaneers, Texans, and Jets.

There are ten more that have only produced a single MVP and another six that have exactly two to their name. That leaves 11 that can boast at least three, and here’s a look at the members of that somewhat exclusive club from least to most impressive.

There are six teams linked to a trio of MVPs, and I’m simply going to go in alphabetical order.

That means we’re starting with the Bills, who are represented here thanks to:

  • O.J. Simpson (1973)
  • Thruman Thomas (1991)
  • Josh Allen (2024)

Simpson won in a much more decisive manner than Thomas and Allen, as he got 95% of the vote after becoming the first NFL player to rush for 2,000 yards in a season.

Denver Broncos: 3

All three of the Broncos players who’ve won MVP played an instrumental role in bringing a Super Bowl to Denver at some point, as the list includes three Hall of Famers in the form of:

  • John Elway (1987)
  • Terrell Davis (1998)
  • Peyton Manning (2013)

However, Davis is the only one who won his the same season the franchise prevailed in The Big Game.

Washington Commanders: 3

Washington would be a bit lower here if we were using the name they were going by when their MVP winners secured the award, as they’re still waiting for the day someone in a Commanders uniform joins:

  • Larry Brown (1972)
  • Mark Moseley (1982)
  • Joe Theismann (1983)

Moseley is also responsible for a fun piece of NFL trivia, as he’s the only placekicker who’s been named MVP.

New England Patriots: 3

This is the first team mentioned so far that features a player who’s won multiple MVPs, and you probably won’t be surprised to learn it’s Tom Brady, who became the first Patriot to earn the honor in 2007 and did so again in 2010 and 2017.

Las Vegas Raiders: 3

We’ve got another franchise that was located in a different city than the one it currently calls home when these MVPs were won—and in this case, there are two different ones.

The Raiders were still in Los Angeles when Marcus Allen got the nod in 1985, and they were in Oakland during Ken Stabler’s win in 1974 and Rich Gannon’s in 2002.

Minnesota Vikings: 3

The Vikings had two players win MVP in the 1970s: defensive tackle Alan Page got his in 1971, while QB Fran Tarkenton joined the ranks in 1975.

Minnesota had to wait a while for that duo to turn into a trio, but Adrian Peterson got them there in 2012.

Cleveland Browns: 4

The Browns are one of two teams that boast a quartet of MVPs, although it’s been a while.

Jim Brown was the first and second player to earn the honor after the AP introduced it in 1957, as he ushered in the new era with back-to-back wins before getting a third in 1965.

Brian Snipe is the fourth and most recent addition, as the QB won in 1980.

Los Angeles Rams: 4

Roman Gabriel was the first member of the Rams to win the MVP, as the QB got his in 1969 during the team’s first stint in Los Angeles.

The franchise is still on the search for its first one since returning to The City of Angels, as Marshall Faulk (2000) and Kurt Warner (who sandwiched that win with two of his own in 1999 and 2001) got them when the Rams were in St. Louis.

The 49ers are the only team with a total of five MVP winners, and they can credit three different players who all won thanks to what they achieved as a quarterback.

John Brodie became the first in 1970, while Joe Montana went back-to-back beginning in 1989 before Steve Young got two of his own in 1992 and 1994.

Indianapolis Colts: 9

The Colts would be on this list if you only accounted for the time the franchise spent in Baltimore, a run where MVPs were won by:

  • Johnny Unitas (1964 and 1967)
  • Earl Morrall (1968)
  • Bert Jones (1976)

All of those players were quarterbacks—as was Peyton Manning, who won four of the record five MVPs he racked up during his career in Indianapolis in 2003, 2004, 2008, and 2009.

Green Bay Packers: 10

The Packers are still the team to beat on the MVP front with the help of some standout QBs: Aaron Rodgers won four (2011, 2014, 2020, and 2021), Brett Favre had three (1995, 1996, and 1997), and Bart Starr got his only one in 1966.

If you can do some basic math, you know that leaves two men unaccounted for, and they are running backs Paul Hornung (1961) and Jim Taylor (1962).
