Aryna Sabalenka was furious with Amanda Anisimova for her lack of apology at Wimbledon. The world No. 1 snapped at the American because she refused to apologize for a lucky bounce on a net cord winner.
Why say sorry if you’re not sorry? The unspoken rule is asinine to begin with.
Sabalenka, the top-ranked tennis player in the world right now, faced No. 13-seed Anisimova in the semifinal round of the Wimbledon Championships at the All England Club on Thursday morning. The latter took the first set but the former took the second.
Both players battled back and forth during the start of the third set. However, it was the 23-year-old American who jumped out to a 4-2 lead over the 27-year-old Belarusian in the deciding frame.
Amanda Anisimova held a 40-30 lead over Aryna Sabalenka during the seventh game of the third set. She scored the winner off of the net cord to win her fifth game of the set. It clipped the top of the tape.

The ball landed just inside the line and died. Sabalenka could not get a return.

That is considered a “cheap point” in tennis. For some reason, it is an unspoken rule for the player who scores a net cord winner to apologize to the opponent for winning the point in such a manner.
Anisimova did not do so after she won the fifth game of the third set. Sabalenka was furious. She barked at her opponent for the lack of apology. Her tantrum was super lame even if it was an intimidation tactic.
At what point does the tennis community call out Sabalenka for her behavior? Here she is bullying Anisimova not not saying sorry for a net cord point. Let’s not forget her rudeness to Coco Gauff. #wimbledon #tennis pic.twitter.com/uEUog3Agk3

I don’t understand the reason for an apology. It’s one of those stupid unspoken rules for a centuries-old sport that prides itself on class and manners. Blah blah blah. Who cares?
Amanda Anisimova most certainly did not. She completely ignored Aryna Sabalenka. Did not even look.
And then she went on to win the match. Anisimova beat Sabalenka to advance to the Wimbledon final.
