The Army football team upset UTSA on the road in San Antonio. The Black Knights improved to 6-5 ahead of a season-ending rivalry matchup with Navy.
A tense scene followed the surprise win as coaches of both sides exchanged words on the field. An Army football tradition played a role in that interaction.
UTSA entered as two-score favorite and appeared on their way to victory early in the game. The Roadrunners jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead.
The Black Knights stormed back with 20 straight points. From there, the two sides traded blows to make for an exciting finish.
Army landed a huge football win.
UTSA was able to regain the lead in the fourth quarter thanks to a pair of Owen McCown touchdown passes. That set the stage for drama.
The Black Knights drove 75 yards in 13 plays on a methodical possession that ate up more than six minutes. On third-and-goal from the 4-yard line, quarterback Cale Hellums connected with tight end Parker Poloskey for the go-ahead score.
Army would make a defensive stand to win, 27-24.
After the game, each side sang their alma mater. In Army football tradition, the Black Knights stood behind the UTSA squad as the bands played.
Jeff Traylor was not happy.
He was seen shouting at Army players and coaches before a very brief but heated conversation with Jeff Monken. The two sides were separated before the situation escalated further.
After the game, Traylor chalked it up to being an “emotional ballgame.”
The singing of the alma maters is often a tradition of respect. That will be on full display next week when Army plays Navy in the annual rivalry game.
In this case, the opposite was seen. Traylor didn’t enjoy Army’s presence near his team.
