Oklahoma fans have multiple reasons to be excited about the 2025 college football season and new transfer quarterback John Mateer is the biggest one. He bears a striking resemblance to Baker Mayfield.
That is true both on and off the field, but certainly the latter.
Brent Venables hired former Washington State offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle during the offseason. Mateer, who entered the transfer portal after playing three seasons of college football in Pullman, followed him to Norman. The familiarity with Arbuckle and a proximity to his home town of Little Elm, Texas were the primary factors in his decision. A large NIL package certainly helped.
Mateer burst onto the scene with a monster year as the Cougars’ starting quarterback in 2024. He took over for Cam Ward and picked up right where the soon-to-be first round pick left off. The 6-foot-1, 219-pound rising redshirt junior completed 64.6% of his passes for 3,139 yards and 29 touchdowns with only seven interceptions and also ran for 826 yards and 15 touchdowns.
I don’t think it’s crazy to say that John Mateer is the best scrambling quarterback in the country.
There are quite a few similarities between Oklahoma’s new signal-caller and perhaps the greatest signal-caller in school history, Baker Mayfield. The lofty comparison is not one-for-one but they have similar styles in terms of how they play the game. They have a certain aura.
John Mateer also looks a lot like Baker Mayfield in a literal sense. A recent video posted by the Sooners to social media sparked the physical comparison.
Mateer was rocking a headband just like Mayfield. He even shares the same gap between his front teeth.

All that is missing is the beard/scruff. To compare:

I am not saying that it’s a perfect science, because it’s not— but once you see it, you won’t be able to unsee it!

Baker Mayfield won a Heisman Trophy and led the Oklahoma Sooners to the College Football Playoff. Can his look-a-like do the same? There is a lot of pressure on John Mateer to succeed!
