Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs needed overtime to defeat Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Bucs on Monday Night Football. They ultimately won the game 30-24 and improved to 8-0.

During the overtime coin toss, Tampa Bay Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield seemed resigned to his fate as soon as the Chiefs won the toss, which gave them the ability to receive the ball and drive down the field for the game-winning touchdown.

In the NFL, if the first team to possess the ball in overtime scores a touchdown, the game is over. Mayfield never got to see the ball in overtime on Monday night.

In their 30-24 win over the Tampa Bay Bucs, improving their record on the season to 8-0, Patrick Mahomes completed 34 of 44 passes for 291 yards and three touchdowns.

Baker Mayfield, whose Bucs fell below .500 to 4-5 following a promising start to the season, completed 23 of 31 passes for 200 yards and two touchdowns in the loss.

Mahomes and the Chiefs are currently chasing what would be a historic third-straight Super Bowl title, having won the championship in each of the last two seasons. If the Chiefs do win this year’s Super Bowl, that’ll bring Mahomes’ total to four before turning 30 years old.

With nine games remaining on their schedule, the Chiefs will close out the 2024 season with games against the Denver Broncos (twice), Buffalo Bills, Carolina Panthers, Las Vegas Raiders, Los Angeles Chargers, Cleveland Browns, Houston Texans, and Pittsburgh Steelers.

As for the Bucs, their season closes out with games against the San Francisco 49ers, New York Giants, Carolina Panthers (twice), Las Vegas Raiders, Los Angeles Chargers, Dallas Cowboys, and New Orleans Saints.
