The 13 Most Glorious Mullets In The History Of Sports

The Beastie Boys are credited with dreaming up the word that’s used for the hairstyle known as the “mullet” when they coined the term in the mid-1990s, although countless people were already rocking the style prior to that point. That includes a number of athletes who paved the way for others who’ve embraced it, and there are some who really stand out from the pack when it comes to the best of the best.

These are the best mullets to come out of the world of sports

Plenty of athletes have opted to do some business in the front and party in the back with the mullet they grew out at some point during their career, and I decided to pay tribute to the ones who’ve done it best by honoring the sickest examples we’ve been lucky enough to witness with our very own eyes.

There isn’t a single sport that’s known for producing athletes with amazing hair more than hockey, and I had to be fairly deliberate when it came to which guys ended up making the cut here.

However, Jaromir Jagr was an absolute no-brainer thanks to the mullet that was lurking under his bucket when he kicked off his lengthy NHL career with the Penguins.

Barry Melrose played 300 games in the seven NHL seasons he spent with the Jets, Maple Leafs, and Red Wings, but he’s best known for his stints as a coach and analyst that really let him flex on the hair front.

Andre Agassi

It feels slightly disingenuous to put Andre Agassi on this list, as the wild hair that made him stand out was actually a wig he turned to after he started going bald in his late teens. However, it managed to fool plenty of people, and I have to give him credit even if he didn’t put in the work the rest of the people on this list did.

John Daly

There were a number of reasons John Daly didn’t fit the mold of the typical golfer when he burst onto the scene, and the mullet he rocked after taking the sport by storm was certainly one of them.

Randy Johnson

There are a number of baseball players who’ve had a mullet hiding under their hat and helmet, and none of them stand out more (in a literal and figurative sense) than Randy Johnson, who mastered the art of the mullet with the Mariners.

John Kruk

John Kruk comes off as the kind of dude who was born with a mullet, but the man who kicked off his MLB career with the Padres didn’t embrace the look that just made too much sense until he joined the Phillies.

Rod Beck

You’d be hard-pressed to find any MLB player who was rocking more devastating one-two hair punch than the mullet and mustache pitcher Rod Beck opted for during his career.

Basketball players are underrepresented on this list. However, Dwayne Schintzius, the Kurt Russell lookalike who played at Florida and then spent eight seasons in the NBA in the 1990s, more than picks up the slack with what is easily one of the most impressive mullets on it.

Jared Allen

Jared Allen once pledged to keep rocking the mullet until he died, and while the Hall of Fame defensive end reneged on that promise before getting married in 2010, his contributions to the cause were still more than enough to make this list.

Brian Bosworth

Brian Bosworth styled his signature blond locks in a number of different ways during a football career where he made a name for himself at Oklahoma before a shoulder injury brought his time in the NFL to an end after just two full seasons.

He kept his hair on the shorter side during his time with the Sooners, but he leaned into the mullet by letting it grow out while he was with the Seahawks.

Don Majkowski spent a decade in the NFL and kicked off his career with a six-year run as the starting quarterback for the Packers before he lost that gig courtesy of Brett Favre. He may not have been able to rival the talents of that legendary QB, but the man who replaced Majkowski probably couldn’t have pulled off a mullet as majestic as his.

Mike Gundy

Mike Gundy opted for a fairly clean-cut look during his playing days at Oklahoma State, and he went the same route after returning to his alma mater and taking over as the coach of the Cowboys in 2005.

However, he started to let his luscious locks grow out midway through the 2010s on his way to debuting what is easily the best mullet a college football coach has ever rocked.

I know Kenny Powers is not a real person, but I’d be remiss if I made a list of the best mullets in sports history and didn’t mention him.
