A brutal week for Bill Belichick and UNC ended with a heartbreaking fumble at Cal on Friday night. The Golden Bears escaped with a win late in the fourth quarter of their college football game against the Tar Heels and immediately took a savage shot at their opponent.
It was salt in the wound.
The legendary NFL head coach dropped to 2-4 during his first season coaching college football. He and Jordon Hudson have a long flight home.
Bill Belichick can’t win.
Rumors started to swirl about a potential ouster in Chapel Hill about 10 days ago. There was enough speculation that Belichick could be fired to force North Carolina and its head coach to release a joint statement regarding their respective futures together.
The 73-year-old is “fully committed to UNC football” and “has the full support of the athletic department.”
This kind of statement is not that uncommon for a program in disarray. It is extremely rare just five games into a head coach’s first year.
Additional details regarding the Bill Belichick era at UNC make it sound way worse than anybody even thought. And then it came out just a few days ago that general manager Michael Lombardi sought Saudi money prior to the season.
If that was not awkward enough, Pablo Torre uncovered (and released) extremely awkward video of a mic’d-up Jordon Hudson exerting control over her much-older boyfriend. She belittled television producers and graphic designers, insulted their work and talked about them behind their backs.
Meanwhile, the Tar Heels had to try and put up their blinders in preparation for a road game in Berkeley. They traveled more than 2,000 miles for a conference game and lost in heartbreaking fashion.
Yes, Jordon was there.
She did not want to be photographed but she walked right through a video.
Cal mocked North Carolina.
UNC almost took a lead over Cal with less than four minutes left in the fourth quarter.
6-foot-3, 217-pound wide receiver Nathan Leacock caught a pass from quarterback Gio Lopez at the five-yard-line, broke a tackle and powered his way to the end zone. And then disaster struck.
The Golden Bears knocked the ball out before the goal line and recovered the fumble.
What should’ve been six points for the Tar Heels instead became a turnover that effectively ended the game. Cal went on to win by three, at a final score of 21-18.

As soon as the ball changed possessions on Leacock’s fumble, the University of California, Berkeley immediately posted a joint statement on the scoreboard. It was in direct mockery of the statement released by Bill Belichick and North Carolina earlier this month.
Oof. And then Cal followed up with a mockery of Hudson. Double oof.

If that was not bad enough, Bill Belichick, Jordon Hudson and the Tar Heels still had to fly back home across most of the country after the loss. You hate to see it.
