The Florida football team inexplicably lost to South Florida in Week 2 of the 2025 season. Head coach Billy Napier’s seat is now scorching hot.

Napier entered the year with immense pressure from the fanbase. His job security was waning. The coach’s latest surrender has shown it’s just a matter of time before he is forced out.

The Gators fell 18-16 in the Swamp on Saturday as a 17.5-point favorite. They were outgained by the Bulls. They lost the turnover battle. They played undisciplined with 11 penalties.

With all of that being said, Florida still held a 16-15 lead up until the final play. South Florida drove 87 yards in eight plays to set up a game-winning field goal. It was able to bleed clock after getting in kicking range.

Florida fans are unhappy with how the final moments played out. They’re directing their anger at Napier.

Billy Napier’s clock management questioned.

USF won the game on a 20-yard field goal off the foot of Nico Gramatica. It was essentially an extra point with the Bulls driving to the Florida two-yard line before the final play.

The Gators had two timeouts on the last few plays of the drive. They kept them in the back pocket as South Florida drained precious seconds.

Napier was asked about that decision after the fact. He admitted his surrender in the postgame.

Napier said once the Bulls got close enough, the timeouts were useless. Yes, he could’ve used them to stop the clock, but it still wouldn’t have kept South Florida from lining up for a field goal on the final play.

He might be right. Florida had two timeouts. USF had three plays. There was a little over minute left in the game when the Bulls entered field goal range.

Even with two stops, they could’ve sat on the ball. There may have been an opportunity to save 20 seconds, give or take. The bigger issue, though, was that the defense wasn’t getting stops on first down, allowing the Bulls to continually move the chains.

Either way, Napier admitted defeat by not calling the timeouts. He was going to let the game play out.

Napier will be forced out.

At least if the fans have anything to do with it. The overwhelming response to his reasoning on the clock management was negative.

“He needs to be fired,” one follower wrote. “It’s proof doesn’t know what he’s doing as a head coach,” said another.

“Shame on UF admin for not showing him the door already.”

Right or wrong, Billy Napier is being blasted for his decision making. The fanbase is unhappy with the loss. They need a target for their criticism.

The head coach is the easy target, even if bad penalties and an inability to get stops were the true culprits on that final drive.

Napier fell to 20-20 as a coach in Gainesville. His leash is growing shorter. If it were up to fans, he would’ve been gone on Saturday night. It’s only a matter of time before the administration catches up.
