Bob Costas is a broadcasting legend. Few in the history of sports broadcasting have had a better or longer career than Bob Costas.
But, he is not well-liked for his work calling baseball games, and unfortunately for Yankees and Royals fans, they’ve had to hear him all series. On Wednesday, they had to suffer through Costas making a terrible broadcasting mistake in a big spot in the game.
Costas already took some flak earlier in the series for making excuses for Giancarlo Stanton’s slow running on a double play. Plus, he’s always being criticized for being low energy or going off into tangents about things that have little to do with the playoff baseball game right in front of him.
But, the criticism that got the most traction during Game 3 of the ALDS between the Yankees and Royals dealt with something that actually happened during the game.
With Kansas City trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the 8th, Vinny Pasquantino came up to bat with one out and a runner on first. He flared one up the middle, and Costas instantly pronounced it to be a base hit. But, that’s not how it actually turned out.

Hey Bob, you might want to wait until you’re 100% sure it’s going to be a base hit before you say it’s going to be a base hit. Pretty much all of us have been to a baseball game, and we know that sometimes our eyes deceive us when a ball leaves the bat. But, for Bob Costas to get this play wrong in such a big spot is pretty shocking.
Listening to Bob Costas call a baseball game is like listening to the assortment of pre-recorded tracks for a very depressing baseball video game

The Yankees won, 3-2.
