The Boo Carter situation at the University of Tennessee continues to get more interesting. That’s not necessarily a good thing for the Volunteers.

Their star player has had a tumultuous offseason, leading to rumors of his departure. His mom reignited the drama with a string of posts on social media.

Carter is entering his sophomore season with the Vols. The Chattanooga native was an all-conference performer as a freshman, making impacts on both defense and special teams.

Carter led the SEC in punt return average. He cracked into the starting secondary midway through the season. He was expected to become a team leader in Year 2.

That has not been the case.

Boo Carter has not been plugged in.

Reports of missed workouts and tardiness throughout the summer surfaced ahead of fall camp. It supposedly infuriated teammates and staff.

“They’re having some issues with him. I do think that’s real, and I don’t at this point in time think it’s a slam dunk that he’s playing here this year…

“Tennessee paid [Carter] a lot of money to keep him here, and quite frankly, he has not been plugged in this summer.”

-Tennessee insider Tony Basilio

Boo Carter signed a lucrative NIL deal to play for the Vols last offseason. He has been less than committed this year.

Whispers of his potential transfer circulated following the initial reports, but ultimately, head coach Josh Heupel allowed the defensive back to stay.

“When we started training camp… there were steps that he had to take to continue to earn his place in the scope of what we’re doing as a football team. He has taken those steps. He’s continued to grow. I like what he’s been able to do here… [but] it’s still day-to-day.”

Carter has since been working his way back into his coach’s good graces. His mom might be eradicating those efforts.

Carter’s mom cryptically teased a transfer.

“But if it was Boo, it would be all over social media,” she wrote in a Facebook post. “I can’t wait to mfn Go! Fast!” she then added.

It’s unclear what her initial post was in reference to. Clearly, she’s upset with how her son’s situation at Tennessee was handled.

Boo Carter’s mom later spoke about the University of Colorado, a school that was heavily involved in the defender’s recruitment prior to his Tennessee commitment.

Rumors about Carter’s transfer to Colorado surfaced after his initial offseason run in. That noise had largely been silenced given Heupel’s decision to keep him on the roster. Now, it’s come back to the forefront.

For now, Boo Carter remains a member of the Tennessee football team. There are doubts as to whether that relationship will last.
