Brian Daboll is in his third year as head coach of the New York Giants. Things are not going well.
A promising start to the former Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator’s tenure came crashing down in 2023 and has not recovered.
The Giants missed the playoffs at 6-11 last season. They are 0-2 so far this season after a blowout loss to the Vikings and a one-possession loss to the Commanders. Daniel Jones completed 54% of his passes with as many interceptions as touchdowns. Saquon Barkley is averaging 4.4 yards per carry for the Eagles.
Although Daboll’s recent failures may not fall entirely on his shoulders, it is the head coach’s job to get his team ready to play. It is his job to win games regardless of circumstance.
Brian Daboll is not winning. New York is 5-6 in its last six games, dating back to last December. Yikes!
To hit the panic button this early in the season would be an overreaction.
However, a loss to the Browns on Sunday could be the beginning of the end. An 0-4 start after a loss to the Cowboys on Thursday might seal the fate of this team and the players reportedly feel the same.
According to Jordan Raanan of ESPN, several Giants players are starting to sour on Daboll.
I’ve spoken to guys over the past few days and some of them — not all of them — have said it’s starting to get shaky in there. The confidence in Brian Daboll is hanging by a thread.
Their trust in him is waning.
— Jordan Raanan on the Breaking Big Blue podcast
If that wasn’t concerning enough, it sounds like the head coach will lose the entire locker room if he does not lead the Giants to victory in one (or both) of their next two games. There is very little hope for an 0-4 team to turn things around and make the playoffs.
Brian Daboll’s job security is rapidly dwindling. He is not going to be employed at the end of the season if New York cannot string together a series of wins in a hurry and it starts this weekend. Losing the trust of his players is the quickest way to get fired. A loss to Cleveland is the quickest way to lose trust.
