The US Women’s Open got underway on Thursday at Erin Hills Golf Course in Wisconsin. A Round 1 group of Lexi Thompson, Nelly Korda, and Charley Hull headlined the opening day.
The scene was tense during the first hole of the event. Hull appeared annoyed at one of her LPGA groupmates on the green.
Pace of play has been an issue for players over the last few years. Last season, Hull was heard blasting her competitors for a lack of urgency on the course. She offered a solution in November.
“It’s crazy,” she said of the slow pace. “I’m quite ruthless, but I said, ‘Listen, if you get three bad timings, like every time there’s a two-shot penalty, if you have three of them, you lose your Tour card instantly…’ I’m sure that would hurry up a lot of people.”

That solution was drastic, with Hull acknowledging it would never be a course of action taken by the LPGA. Still, it displayed her frustration with the slow play that too often resulted in late finishes in darker conditions.
Lexi Thompson agreed with Charley Hull on the topic.
“I definitely think slow play is an issue,” she said ahead of last year’s CME Group Tour Championship. “Rounds shouldn’t take more than four and a half hours, especially in threesomes.”
Thompson wants the pace to speed up. Still, she didn’t play quickly enough for Hull on Thursday.
A viral video of the duo on the first green at the US Women’s Open showed Hull appearing frustrated with Thompson as she lined up a short putt.
It seems Charley might be frustrated with Lexi’s pace of play. A couple of deep breathes and muttering something.

We’ll see if the frustration has any impact on her play. At the very least, it might cause her to pick her smoking habit back up! Hull might welcome a new playing partner on Day 2.
