Chris Weidman is not happy with the UFC and isn’t afraid to let everyone know it. The former middleweight champion called out the fight organization on Monday for not giving him his money after UFC 309.
Chris Weidman had been scheduled to fight middleweight Eryk Anders at the UFC 309 event in his home state of New York. Unfortunately, after the fighters had weighed-in, Anders had to withdraw from the bout due to food poisoning. That left Weidman with no one to fight.
The fight with Eryk Anders has now been has now been rescheduled for next month at UFC 310 as a catchweight bout. However, Weidman, who has fought only for the UFC since 2011, spanning 19 straight fights, now says he didn’t receive his what he believes he was owed for UFC 309.
“My show money is my win money, I have guaranteed money so that was my point, I showed up, you guys had that on the budget sheet to begin with, you guys made a great night, why do you guys keep that money and I don’t?” Weidman told Ariel Helwani on his show. “That was my thought.
“Their thoughts were, ‘Listen, this happens on like 40 percent of the cards. If we pay people to not fight…’ They just want to be consistent on what they do in those situations. That’s what I think they’ve decided to do consistently for their business.”
Chris Weidman did add, “[The UFC is] going to take care of me. I’ll say that. They’re gonna, they’re doing something for me. I’ll make more money… I’m not getting my full purse. I’ll put that out there.
“Which you know, it’s tough. You show up you and then I get an opportunity to fight here just a couple weeks later. So, I’ll be fine. I get my full pay then. And I don’t know what happens if Anders doesn’t show up this time.
“They also said that they were trying to find another opponent for me, I guess that whole day,” Weidman continued. “They were looking for 205-pounders that either fought that day or anybody in the area, trying to do one of those Dan Ige-type situations.
“Apparently the New York commission was not going to allow anything on that type of short notice so that’s what stopped that from happening.”
