The Northwestern State football program called it quits on Saturday after a 66-0 beatdown at the hands of the Minnesota Golden Gophers, despite there being more than six minutes remaining on the clock.

Late in the fourth quarter, a weather delay stopped the game. Rather than return to the field and play out the remaining six minutes and 15 seconds, the two teams decided it was best to end the game “by mutual consent.”

Minnesota Beat Northwestern State So Bad That It Quit Before The Game Ended

While it was probably the right decision for both teams, it’s still a rough look for the Demons, who went 0-6 in 2023 and then 0-12 a year ago.

Miraculously, Northwestern State, which is located in Natchitoches, Louisiana, won its first game of the season under second-year head coach Blaine McCorkle, downing Alcorn State.

But the Demons were always up against the odds in Week 2, entering the game as 43.5-point underdogs. The Golden Gophers not only easily covered that spread, they led 49-0 at the half.

“Minnesota could care less (about the Demons’ season-opening win),” McCorkle said earlier this week. “What it will be is an example of toughness. It’s going to take some mental toughness to put those things behind you. We can’t be patting ourselves on the back. Minnesota’s not worried about that.”

Apparently, that toughness does not apply to playing all 60 minutes.

Northwestern State did leave with something, at least. The Golden Gophers paid their opponents $500,000 to serve as human crash-test dummies.

The blowout only furthers the ongoing debate about “buy games” and their place in college football. Many fans believe they’re not only unsporting but also a danger to players on the lesser teams.
