Pat McAfee did not have to give away $300,000 during the most recent edition of his weekly kicking contest on College Gameday. Indiana freshman Jeram Salles was unable to get the job done after the original kicker tore his ACL during warmups just moments before he went live on national television.

It was an absolutely devastating injury for someone who camped out overnight with hopes of being selected for the opportunity.

For those who are not familiar by now, McAfee’s contest is simple. A student at the host university of College Gameday each week is selected at random from a lottery. He or she is invited to kick a 33-yard field goal. Should the kick go through the uprights, he or she wins a large amount tuition money. If he or she misses the first kick, he or she typically gets a second chance at even more money.

Although Salles got to kick, he actually did not win the lottery on Saturday. The first-year finance major was selected the first alternate. It took a nasty knee injury to the original kicker, Jake, for him to get his shot.

Boston Connor of the Pat McAfee Show had a front-row view for the unfortunate incident. His video shows the exact moment in which Jake blew out his knee during warmups.

It doesn’t get much gnarlier than that right there.

The original kicker was rushed to the hospital with a torn ACL, if not worse, which gave Salles a chance to be the hero off the bench. McAfee promised $100,00 both to him and Jake if he was able to convert the 33-yarder but his first attempt went wide left.

Against Stanford Steve’s wishes, McAfee gave Salles a second kick for $150,000. It also went left.

Neither first alternate Jeram Salles nor original kicker Jake got any money. Unfortunately, the latter will still have some expensive hospital bills and a lengthy recovery ahead of him.
