Cormani McClain is the only bright spot for the Florida Gators so far this college football season. The former five-star recruit showed major growth of character during another demoralizing loss on Saturday.
He never stopped hustling even when the game was out of reach.
Although this specific play will be buried on the box score amid a myriad of issues in Gainesville on both sides of the ball, it had a direct impact on the final score. One of the most scrutinized players in college football history finally seems to have it figured out.
Cormani McClain was not a fit at Colorado.
McClain was originally committed to Miami as the top-ranked defensive back in the recruiting Class of 2023 and a top-15 player overall. However, a late push by Deion Sanders got him to flip to Colorado.
His brief tenure in Boulder was a disaster.
Coach Prime sent a very public message to his top-ranked recruit to explain why he struggled for playing time during the early season. Travis Hunter ripped him a new one on the sideline. He later got benched during his first start for the Buffaloes and hit the transfer portal after the season.
Sanders called him out for his lack of effort on his way out the door. McClain threw shade right back at his former head coach, saying he didn’t want to “play for clicks.”
It was a messy start to the highly-touted five-star recruit’s college football career.
Florida gave him an opportunity.
Even though Cormani McClain was once considered a can’t-miss prospect, his list of suitors in the transfer portal was limited because nobody wanted to deal with his attitude and grades were an issue. The Gators ultimately gave him an opportunity as a walk-on.
Unfortunately, McClain did not start fresh.
He reportedly annoyed his new teammates upon arrival to Florida. He also made even more negative claims against Deion Sanders and Colorado instead of keeping quiet to focus on the task at hand.
Fortunately, McClain finally got it figured out.
The Gators put him on scholarship during the offseason. Their rising junior cornerback also worked hard in the weight room to look like a completely different person with boulders for shoulders.
It was a very positive sign of what was to come.
Cormani McClain also looks like a different player. He made a great solo tackle against USF.

He also played lockdown defense against LSU. Garrett Nussmeier would not throw in McClain’s direction.
And yet, the play that stands out the most did not matter.
Cormani McClain got on his horse to make an impressive chasedown tackle to prevent another Tigers touchdown with less than two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. His hustle made it happen.

Florida gave up. McClain never did. That is a big attitude adjustment over two years ago. I don’t understand why he is not starting!
