Ed Cooley was fired up during the second half of Saturday’s college basketball game against Syracuse. The second-year head coach at Georgetown chirped at an opposing player who tried to sneak into his team’s huddle.
It was a tense exchange at a crucial moment of a back-and-forth battle between the former Big East rivals.
Cooley first lost his mind when his star player, Jayden Epps, was fouled by Elijah Mooore in the backcourt. Officials did not see the foul because it was away from the play. They did not immediately go to a review but the Hoyas’ bench complained loud enough that they actually stopped play to take a look.
As the officials went over to the scorer’s table, Cooley called his players over to huddle. Syracuse senior Lucas Taylor tried to pull a fast one and snuck into the huddle. Except he wasn’t very sneaky.
Georgetown noticed Taylor’s presence. They immediately started jawing in his direction.
Naturally, tensions briefly escalated from there. Officials stepped in to break things up. As did Cooley.
In doing so, Cooley ran his mouth back at Taylor and the Orange with a big smile on his face as boos rained down at the Carrier Dome.

Ed Cooley is one of the most brash coaches in college basketball. He never minces his words. He never holds back. We saw both of those things come to fruition in Upstate New York on Saturday.
Some people might consider him to be insufferable, but that’s good for college basketball. It is fun when coaches yell at players, whether you like it or not! And to make the whole thing even sweeter, the Hoyas pulled off the biggest win of its new era.
Don’t look now but a Georgetown team that was supposed to be “rebuilding” moved to 8-2 with its win over Syracuse. Cooley always gets the last laugh.
