One ESPN announcer may have saved himself before making a career-ending mistake while on air.

On Tuesday, Joey Chestnut won his 16th 4th of July Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog eating contest.

After the contest ended, one of the ESPN guys tried to compare Chestnut’s accomplishment to the late great Bill Russell, who recently passed away at 88.

Before finishing his sentence, the ESPN announcer noticed his mistake and stayed silent before his partner picked up where he left off.

Here’s the video of how the awkward exchange went down.
