In the early hours of Wednesday, May 7, news broke that that the Pittsburgh Steelers were trading wide receiver George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys. The trade reportedly involves a third-round draft pick going to the Steelers in exchange for Pickens.

The news was broken by ESPN’s Adam Schefter at around 6:45 a.m., prior to ESPN’s daily morning show Get Up!, which is hosted by longtime host Mike Greenberg.

While reporting on Schefter’s breaking news, Mike Greenberg used an awkward turn of phrase when he said that Schefty “dropped that bomb [news of the Pickens trade] from a plane earlier this morning.”

Greenberg, however, quickly clocked his clunky phrasing and tried to correct course.

Schefter reported that the Cowboys sent a 2026 third-round pick to the Cowboys in exchange for Pickens, while the Cowboys will also be sending a 2027 fifth-round pick to the Steelers and get back a 2027 sixth-round pick.

Pickens, who was drafted out of the University of Georgia in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft by the Steelers, has 174 catches for 2,841 yards and 12 touchdowns across three seasons in the NFL. The best season of Pickens career so far came in 2023 when he had 63 catches for 1,140 yards and five touchdowns.

Reports seem to indicate that, despite his on-the-field talents, Pickens proved to be too much of an off-the-field headache for the Steelers, who would’ve also been faced with the decision of whether or not they wanted to sign him to a contract extension at the end of the 2025 season.

Pickens will now take on a different role in Dallas as he’ll slot in as the teams #2 wide receiver behind Pro Bowler CeeDee Lamb.
