New updates have been released on the fan who fell over the 21-foot high Clemente Wall in right field during the Pittsburgh Pirates game at PNC Park Wednesday night. As for how the fan ended up falling over the railing, Pittsburgh Public Safety officials have thus far only stated that the incident is being treated as “accidental in nature.”

According to multiple media reports, the unidentified fan was in critical condition as of Thursday morning. After the fall, the fan was immediately treated by Pittsburgh EMS and the athletic trainers and medical staffs of the Pirates and the Chicago Cubs for approximately five minutes before being put on a stretcher and taken by cart from the playing field. He was then transported to the trauma center at Allegheny General Hospital.

The Pittsburgh Pirates issued a statement shortly after the incident, expressing their concern for the fan. Pittsburgh Public Safety officials stated that they do not anticipate police providing any additional updates to the public, at least on Thursday.

Both Pirates manager Derek Shelton and Cubs manager Craig Counsell were among the first to notice the fan had fallen and alerted the umpires. Players in both dugouts then began waving and pointing while others sprinted to his location along with medical personnel.

“Even though it’s 350 feet away or whatever it is, I mean the fact of how it went down and then laying motionless while the play is going on, I mean Craig saw it, I saw it. We both got out there,” the Pirates manager said after the game. “I think the umpires saw it because of the way it kicked. It’s extremely unfortunate. That’s an understatement.”

“I didn’t see anything happen, but I saw the urgency on [Cubs manager Craig Counsell’s] face when he came out on the field, and I could tell that it was a very scary moment,” said Chicago shortstop Dansby Swanson. “All we could do was just pray for a good, strong recovery for him, just to be with him his family. I have never been part of something like that before and I hope I am never part of something like that again.

“It’s definitely a humble reminder of the gratitude that we get to play this game. Folks obviously come out to support us, and they are a big reason why we are able to do what we do. It’s obviously tough and puts things in perspective. Makes you want to tell everybody you love them and never take that for granted.”
