Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Garrett Crochet is one tough dude. The lefty stayed in a game against the Minnesota Twins after nearly having his nose detached from his face.
Crochet was struck by a line drive off the bat of Carlos Correa. After a brief pause in the action, he returned to the bump to finish out the inning.
Crochet narrowly avoided complete disaster by turning his head away from the batted ball. A few centimeters more and he could’ve been dealing with a much more serious injury.
While significant damage wasn’t done, the pitcher admitted that his nose went instantly numb after the fact. “I immediately go touch my nose just to see if it felt normal,” he said. “It was numb at first from the initial impact.”
The line drive hit Garrett Crochet in the top of the fourth frame. He not only remained in the contest to finish out the inning, but he then trotted back out to record a scoreless fifth.
Crochet struck out Jonah Bride with a filthy sweeper immediately after being grazed by the baseball. It was one of his six Ks on the day. He allowed just one run in the start while surrendering four hits and two walks. Unfortunately, he couldn’t pick up the win.
Crochet left the game with a 3-1 lead. Minnesota overcame that deficit late with four runs in their final three at-bats. The Twins took the Sunday afternoon matchup, 5-4.
The Boston Red Sox acquired the Cy Young candidate in the offseason after he’d spent four seasons with the White Sox. He currently leads the American League in strikeouts while posting a 3-2 record and 2.02 ERA.
Garrett Crochet refused to let the line drive prevent him from finishing out his latest start. It seems he’ll remain on track to make his next scheduled appearance.
