Graeme Hossack Stick Check Slash Chris Kavanagh Lacrosse Controversy PLL

Graeme Hossack may or may not face discipline from the Premier Lacrosse League after his violent stick check on Chris Kavanagh. The play has been submitted for further review.

A ruling will come down on Monday— either way.

Hossack, one of the best long poles in professional lacrosse, is currently in the middle of his fifth season with the Utah Archers. They re-signed the All-World close defender through 2025 during the offseason to round out the club’s top-ranked defense alongside Warren Jeffrey and Mason Woodward. However, they could soon be without him for multiple games because of his reckless play.

The incident in question took place on late Friday night against the California Redwoods. Utah ultimately went on to win the game by one goal but it might’ve lost Hossack in the process.

Kavanagh scooped a ground ball in the attacking half as a pair of Archers players closed in. Midfielder Sam King made the first contact to his midsection and knocked him off-balance. As Kavanagh fell to the ground, Hossack stepped up to deliver a crushing blow to the head. The force of his stick check snapped his long pole. The shaft literally broke in half.

Upon further review, head official Matt Palumb ruled the slash as a regular one-minute penalty. That was it. Graeme Hossack was allowed to continue on. He was not ejected from the contest.

Some lacrosse fans believe it was a nothing burger. Kavanagh tripped. Hossack was trying to make a play on the ball and could not stop the forward momentum of his stick. Others think it was a dirty play.

We will find out the truth in just a few days!

Although Graeme Hossack came out unscathed on Friday, his fate may soon change. The play was submitted to be reviewed for potential discipline. The PLL’s Discipline and Conduct committee will meet on Monday. A suspension is still on the table.
