The new FX series about Aaron Hernandez and the New England Patriots has made waves for its over-the-top portrayal of some the main characters. The Rob Gronkowski character is maybe the most comical.
Gronk was asked about the acting while speaking about American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez with Kay Adams on Thursday. He dropped some surprising knowledge on the viewers!
Clips of the series’ first few episodes are now circulating social media. Those now-viral scenes portray all of New England’s past stars, including Gronk, Hernandez, Robert Kraft, Bill Belichick, and Tom Brady. The whole gang is here!

The show attempts to capture an inside look of the rise and fall of Aaron Hernandez. To this point, reviews have been… mixed.
One particular scene gaining social media attention shows the Hernandez and Gronk characters, both of whom are rookies at the time in the show, meeting in the Patriots’ locker room.
Rob Gronkowski has seen the clip, which is now all over the internet, and he reacted on Thursday.
Gronk said the acting is a bit over the top…
but he’ll give the actor a pass because he happens to know who he is.
Laith Wallschleger plays the role, and it’s not his first time in front of the camera. In fact, he’s acted as Rob Gronkowski’s on-set double for some time!
“It was definitely over the top,” he said while chatting with Kay Adams. “You want to know a fun fact about that clip? That is my good friend, Laith, who is playing me.
“I’ve known him for about 14 years… He plays all my doubles in all my other commercials and everything else I do. He was my double in Kick of Destiny, actually… He’s a good friend.”
What?? 🤯 It turns out the actor portraying @RobGronkowski on FX’s “American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez” is Rob’s friend and acting double Laith. 😂
Laith got us DYING over his accuracy of Gronk’s laugh. 🤣 💀@heykayadams pic.twitter.com/Cf3J0zhaef

Gronk laughed off the “exaggerated” portrayal before noting the attention the clip’s gotten over the last 24 hours.
“Laith is becoming too big time, because I actually shot a commercial yesterday and he was supposed to be my stand-in as well,” Gronkowski said. “He cancelled last second because the clip was going so viral, and he was going so big time.”
The fact that Gronk not only knows who’s playing him, but also has a personal relationship with the actor makes the scene all the funnier.
