On New Year’s Day 1993, actress Halle Berry and Major League Baseball player David Justice got married and became one of the hottest celebrity couples on the planet. Unfortunately, it all came to an acrimonious end in 1997 with Berry seeking a restraining order against Justice and the ballplayer filing for divorce.
This week, in an interview with the All The Smoke podcast, David Justice gave his reasoning for why the marriage didn’t work and why on Earth he filed for divorce from one of the sexiest women in the world.
First off, he said that Berry asked him to marry her after dating for just five months and he “didn’t want to make her feel bad and say no.” [Insert rolling eyes emoji here.]
“I was young, and I had only, honestly, been in one relationship before her. My knowledge and my understanding, my wisdom around relationships, just wasn’t vast,” Justice explained. “So, I’m looking at my mom, and I’m a Midwest guy. So, in my mind, I’m thinking a wife at that time should cook, clean. Then I’m thinking, ‘Okay, if we have kids, is this the woman I want to have kids with and build a family with?’ And at that time, as a young guy, she don’t cook, don’t clean, don’t really seem like motherly.”
In his defense, he did add, “We honestly probably could have made it if I knew about therapy. If we knew about therapy, we probably could have made it.”
Halle Berry responds
On Thursday while celebrating her 59th birthday, in an obvious reaction to David Justice’s comments about her, Halle Berry posted a series of tropical vacation photos to Instagram and X (Twitter), including one of a card envelope with “MOM” written it on it. She also captioned the photo carousel, “Phew…! cooking, cleaning and mothering.”
Numerous celebrities including Rocsi Diaz, Kayla Nicole, Jenna Dewan, Jurnee Smollett, Octavia Spencer, Julianne Moore, Tamron Hall, Jemele Hill, Tyra Banks, and Meagan Good commented with shows of support and congratulations on her birthday, and her comment.
All’s well that ends well, however, as David Justice, who ended up winning two World Series and made the Atlanta Braves Hall of Fame, went on to have three children with his wife of 25 years, Rebecca Villalobos. Meanwhile, Halle Berry went on win a Primetime Emmy Award and an Academy Award and have two children of her own – one with second husband Eric Benet and one with her third husband Olivier Martinez.
