History was made at the X Games in Aspen over the weekend when 19-year-old Hiroto Ogiwara landed the snowboarding’s first-ever 2340 spin in competition. That is a full 6.5 rotations in the air meaning he hit the jump riding regular-footed, did a full 6.5 spins, and landed riding goofy-footed. Just unreal.
The 2340 was enough to earn Hiroto Ogiwara a gold medal in the Men’s Big Air competition. Even more, it has firmly put him on the world’s stage for years to come after becoming the first rider to ever pull this trick off when it mattered the most.
After all these years, the X Games continues to be biggest annual competition for snowboarding and freestyle skiing. It’s where the sport’s best athletes come together to throw down the sickest tricks in front of the rowdiest fans. And this year was one for the record books after Hiroto Ogiwara’s 2340:
I’ve watched that video at least ten times. I still have trouble processing how he was able to spin 6.5x in such a short span of time. I’m not sure I have the abdominal strength to pull that off even if I was landing in a pool of foam and didn’t have to worry about sticking the landing.
Let’s soak in Hiroto Ogiwara’s 2340 one more time. It really is on the Mt. Rushmore of Snowboarding Tricks and the fact that he pulled this off at 19-year-old and *in* the X Games is just incredible:
Thinking ahead to the future, the next level would be 7 full spins for a 2520. Is such a spin even possible? Is that something we’ll see in our lifetimes? Who knows but if we do then it’ll almost certainly be at the X Games.
