Houston Couldn’t Overcome The Ted Cruz Curse In National Championship Game

For much of Monday night’s NCAA Men’s Basketball Division I National Championship Game, it looked like the Houston Cougars would finally capture a national title after two previou championship losses. They led by as many as 12 points in the second half, but ultimately faltered down the stretch and lost to Florida, 65-63.

There was one factor the Houston Cougars simply couldn’t overcome. That, of course, was the presence of Texas Senator Ted Cruz (R), who has consistently been a curse for Texas teams when he’s been in attendance.

After losing in the championship game in 1983 and 1984, Houston finally made it back Monday night after a dramatic come-from-behind win over Duke on Saturday in the Final Four. They outplayed Florida most of the night. But, they simply could not execute down the stretch on offense, turning the ball over more in the final few minutes than they had all game up to that point.

Houston fans knew they were in trouble when reports circulated that Cruz was at the game, as teams rarely win when he’s in attendance. He even had a bet with Florida Senator Rick Scott (R).

Sure enough, Houston lost, and fans were furious.

Ted Cruz simply has to stop coming to sporting events if Texas teams want to win titles at more frequent rates.
