What is ESPN? And Is It Worth It For Sports In 2025?

It’s impossible to watch almost anything on ESPN these days without hearing about ESPN+ – So what is ESPN?

ESPN+ is a new streaming service for live sports like UFC fights, college football, Top Rank boxing, and Serie A soccer, along with so much more.

But is ESPN worth it? This was a question I was asking myself after I got word of all that the sports streaming service offered.

With a monthly package of just $5.99 and an annual subscription costing just $69.99, it clearly made sense to pay for the content I wanted most — after all, I’m an obsessed sports fan who never changes the channel off ESPN, ESPN2 or any other sporting events and analysis — but what does ESPN+ give that isn’t available elsewhere?

So what is ESPN?

After getting myself a subscription, I sort of discovered the answer to a question that’s been nagging my buddies and myself: What is ESPN? Turns out ESPN+ is the top-destination for all things sports: After inking a huge deal with the UFC, there’s a new UFC fight streaming on ESPN practically every weekend. There’s also tons of college football and original programming, including Peyton’s Places starring Peyton Manning, SneakerCenter, and NFL Primetime with Chris Berman.

Seriously, if you’re like me and can’t help but know everything about everything going on in the sports world, while looking for entertaining shows, live events and documentaries, then ESPN is the service for you.

And is ESPN worth it?

So why is ESPN worth it? First off, as someone who love sports documentaries, the streaming service hooks it up, making every single 30 for 30 movie ever released available to stream at anytime. That means that, when you’re bored this fall and winter on those long and gloomy nights, you can watch all of the movies from the award-winning series. In addition to the entire catalogue, ESPN releases its newest films — like the most recent documentary, Rodman: For Better or Worse — before they become available to the general public. That’s called being a VIP.

Second, if you love live sports, you may never use anything but ESPN+ again. Whether it’s college football games, MLB, Serie A soccer, Top Rank Boxing, and others, this is the streaming service that brings them all together in one place, making it easier than ever to get the things you want the most.

What other content do you get with ESPN?

Lastly, ESPN has original programming, too. Need some fantasy football advice? Oh, the streaming service has your back. Want to get lost in a new show to binge? With things like Peyton Manning’s Peyton’s Places, to SneakerCity, to Detail with Kobe Bryant, to plenty more, if you’re looking for something sports-related that you can watch over and over, ESPN isn’t short on options.

Given we’re in the midst of fantasy football season, just look at some of the in-depth analysis you get with an ESPN+ subscription.

  • Lineup Recommendation: Projects best lineup based on league settings
  • Free Agency Recommendation: Identify most logical free agent pickups
  • Auction Value Generator: Custom value chart based on your league settings
  • Exclusive Premium Editorial: Daily articles with in-depth analysis from ESPN fantasy experts Mike Clay, Eric Karabell, Tristan Cockroft, and DraftKings Millionaire Maker winner Al Zeidenfeld

So is ESPN+ worth it? If you’re as big of a sports fan as you claim to be, trust me, it definitely is. You don’t want to be the one missing the boat on all that action, so make sure you scoop a subscription as soon as you can to consume everything you could ever imagine.
