Islam Makhachev made a strong case be at the top of pound-for-pound MMA fighter list after his impressive performance against Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 294.

During his media day earlier this week, Makhachev ripped the pound-for-pound rankings for putting Jon Jones at number one pound-for-pound after he beat Ciryl Gane at UFC 285.

“This is what UFC champions have to do, “If you’re a real champion, you have to take fight, doesn’t matter how many days, who it’s going to be. Not like your pound-for-pound champion when they give him Chael Sonnen. If you’re a real champion, you have to fight.

“They put him (Jon Jones) No.1, the No. 1 guy right now, who he beat in his last five fights? We don’t have some names in the top pound-for-pound rankings. I just want to say about the rankings and all these things, this is bullsh-t, and I’m not following anymore.”

On Saturday, Makhachev made quick work vs. a top five pound-for-pound fighter in Volkanovski in a fight that ended with a brutal head-kick KO in the first round.

During his post-fight press conference, Makhachev said he’s done enough to prove that he’s the best MMA fighter in the World.

“Some people underestimated my striking, in the first fight I showed people my striking, I think now, people will respect my striking and I show I’m not just wrestler, grappler or striker, and I know I am best MMA fighter in the World”
