Jacksonville Jaguars Mercilessly Mocked For Making Players Block Without Their Hands

The Jacksonville Jaguars were one of the primary laughing stocks of the NFL over the last few years. A new video from OTAs does not help the organization to be taken more seriously even if the drill in question actually serves a purpose.

It is yet another funny moment from the preseason that allowed fans to clown all over a bad team.

Jacksonville reached the AFC Championship in 2017 but quickly fell to 1-15 just three NFL seasons later. The Jaguars drafted Trevor Lawrence with the first overall pick in 2021 and reached the playoffs in 2022 but they finished at 4-13 in 2024. They’re on their fourth head coach in six years.

This is not to say that Jacksonville will not be much better in the fall. Especially with Travis Hunter Jr.

However, the Jaguars have only won nine or more games just three times since 2007 so history does not bode well for them. And this latest video from practice is absolutely hilarious when presented without context. I can see the memes already. Here is the clip:

As you could imagine, the jokes were not few or far between. They write themselves. Everybody and their mother had something to say. “Are they practicing how to block without their hands because they don’t block anyone anyway?” “2-14 incoming.” “Successful teams don’t do this drill.” Stuff like that.

This video clip is ripe for late October when a Jags player misses a block. You play how you practice!

Even though it is an objectively hilarious video from an optics standpoint, the drill does serve a purpose. That specific video shows only part one of a two-part process focused on running backs in pass protection. Part one is focused only on leverage and absorbing contact. Part two involves the hands.

Here is how it looks when it all comes together with the hip drive, as demonstrated by Tank Bigsby:

We can laugh at the Jaguars all we want, because it looks hilarious without hands, but this drill might actually be an indication of a huge step in the right direction for the organization. The little things matter!
